Simulation-Based Practice and Learning Environment

We offer a wide range of immersive simulation-based education experiences for our students studying healthcare programmes.

Simulation-based education provides a structured, learner-centred environment in which students can learn or practise skills in simulated real-life situations without causing harm or risk to patients.

Simulation-based education activities are provided within various simulated healthcare environments utilising a variety of digital technologies to support the development of simulated experiences for our leaners.

We offer differing simulated environments and various digital technologies to support the development of simulated experiences for our students and there are a number of teaching spaces that can be used for a diverse range of multiprofessional scenarios.

Digital simulation

In the simulated environments we offer a wide variety of technology enhanced learning opportunities.

Our immersive interactive simulation rooms combine various technologies including virtual reality, interactive graphics, video and audio content to provide learners with an innovative multi-sensory learning experience. The technology allows learners to experience varied healthcare and community environments and encourages learners to respond to real-life situations in a safe environment.

Physical simulation

Within the simulated environment there is a number of physical teaching spaces.

A dedicated paramedic space complete with replica sized ambulance
Children and young people’s clinical area
Plinth rooms
Midwifery and neonatal facilities

Telemedicine suite
Primary care consultation rooms
Fully furnished flat
Operating department suite

Each area has piped simulated oxygen and suction and furnished with equipment reflective contemporary clinical practice. A wide range of manikins of varying modalities with several life-like functionality, including palpable pulses, breath, heart, and bowel sounds also support learning. Immersive interactive learning scenarios can be streamed, recorded, and played back via a multi-camera and microphone system whilst the manikins can be voiced to respond to the learner.
