At UCLan, you'll make friends for life, explore your potential and discover new passions. There are plenty more reasons why you'll love living in the North West too...
The Students’ Union
The Students’ Union is at the heart of student life at UCLan. The SU organises loads of events throughout the year, and also provides support to students who need it, on anything from money matters, to academic issues, housing and mental health. If you ever have an issue during your time at University, the SU is the place to go.
The SU is also home to our many fabulous societies, with something for everyone, from Airsoft and entrepreneurship, to photography, debating, media and sport. There are also plenty of political, religious and national groups that you can join, so you will find plenty of people with whom you have something in common. And what’s more, if you can’t find a society you’re interested in, then the SU will help you set up your own!
You can also check out our friendly student bar, which is open every day during term time for food, drink, live sport and events. The bar also hosts a Wednesday social for clubs and societies, as well as karaoke night every Tuesday and a ‘speed quiz’ every Sunday.
We are an inclusive, welcoming University, and we’re sure you’ll fit right in. It’s easy to enjoy a night out without the need to drink alcohol. Many bars and pubs including our own Source bar serve non-alcoholic ‘mocktails’ as well as many other delicious drinks.
Shopping and culture
When it comes to shopping you will never be stuck for choice from popular high street chains to alternative boutiques and independent shops. Preston is also home to St George’s and Fishergate shopping centres, plus the Deepdale Retail Park. Meanwhile, Burnley is home to the Charter Walk shopping centre, with its popular Market Hall and regular outdoor market.
If culture’s more your thing, Preston’s iconic Harris Museum and Art Gallery reveals its history and an in-depth look at the area throughout the ages. More than 750 buildings and structures in Preston are listed by the English Heritage, and there’s plenty to explore, including St Walburge’s Church, just behind our Media Factory
Meanwhile, Burnley is home to the historic Towneley Hall – a 14th century house and grounds, with a fabulous art gallery and museum for you to explore. There is also Gawthorpe Hall, the Woodend Mining Museum, the Weavers’ Triangle and much more!
Sports and activities
If it’s sports and activities you’re looking for, then we have plenty of choice. If you’re in Preston, you may want to take advantage of the free sports membership for access to our state-of-the-art Sir Tom Finney Sports Centre, or hire out sports facilities at our fantastic UCLan Sports Arena.

Preston is home to Fins Scuba , and a short train journey will take you to Go Ape Rivington, where you can take on a treetop adventure in beautiful surroundings, or try out Paintballing Preston to test your tactics to the max. Preston Karting boasts a 500m long circuit for any thrill seekers looking to put their driving skills to the test or get some air at Preston Skatepark located in Moor Park.
If watching sport is more your game, you can catch Championship football at Deepdale, the home of Preston North End, or even Premier League football if you’re based at our Burnley Campus, with Burnley FC’s Turf Moor stadium not too far away.
The great outdoors
Both our Burnley and Preston campuses bring together the best of both worlds – combining a buzzing student life with many links to nature and the great outdoors.
From Preston you’re only a 20-minute bus ride from Brockholes Nature Reserve, home to a diverse range of wildlife as well as a unique floating visitor village. You can also take part in a range of activities from organised walks to jewellery making. The stunning Beacon Fell County Park is located 10 miles from the city and boasts nearly 300 acres of magnificent woodland to explore.
If you have time to journey further afield, you’re only a short train ride from Lancaster with its rich history of castles, towers and witches. Travel slightly further and you will soon reach the spectacular Lake District, England’s largest National Park. Alternatively, if it’s the sea you’re looking for, head west to the seaside resort of Blackpool and its award-winning Pleasure Beach, or a short train ride south to experience sights and sounds of Manchester.
Whichever campus you’re based at, you’ll have great connections to the great outdoors.
Here at UCLan, we pride ourselves on our excellent student support services, and giving you all the opportunities you need to succeed.
