This two year, full time programme is delivered by experienced clinicians and educators. Successful completion leads to the award of an MClinDent Prosthodontics from the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan), a UK University well known as a provider of high quality clinical training and education. The main focus of the course is patient management and the delivery of appropriate, evidence based clinical care. There are supporting modules on critical appraisal, research strategies and clinical audit.

DX4009 – Clinical Audit (10 Credits)
The module will be an introduction to the organisational framework for clinical governance focused on clinical audit. During the module students will learn to audit one’s own practice to ensure satisfactory outcomes following treatment of patients. The students will develop critical appraisal skills in order to support their decision making and professional development based on the best evidence. They will also develop their academic writing skills, communication skills, recognise and avoid plagiarism and be able to cite and reference accurately.
DX4017 - Utilising the evidence base (20 Credits)
DX4017 is a highly interactive, fully online module that provides students with the skills they need to critically appraise the academic literature. The module is divided into three distinct sessions. The first provides students with the necessary study skills and introduction to the basic concepts they will need to complete the module, such as an introduction to research, academic integrity, literature searches, validity and reliability, bias, and statistics. The second session focusses on different quantitative methods and how to critically appraise them, before the third session does the same with qualitative methods. There are two assignments. The first is a critical appraisal of a quantitative research paper. The second asks students to write two research outlines, one quantitative and one qualitative. The course is delivered asynchronously, meaning that pre-recorded lectures and materials are provided through Microsoft Notebook. However, students are also required to engage in frequent critical discussion and collaborative tasks with colleagues using Microsoft Teams. Specific time periods are designated for completion of such tasks in order that all students can benefit.
DX4056 – Core Knowledge in Prosthodontics (50 Credits)
The aim of this module is to introduce foundation topics relating to the safe practice of fixed and removable prosthodontics. The module will cover the knowledge base underpinning the clinical aspects of prosthodontic treatment, including patient examination, treatment planning and case selection.

DX4057 – Core Skills in Prosthodontics (40 Credits)
The aim of this module is to introduce and develop the necessary practical skills required to undertake safe prosthodontic treatment within a primary dental care environment.
Practical procedures will be demonstrated, supervised and assessed within the UCLan clinical training facilities.

Much of this module is delivered at the clinical skills laboratory and training facilities at the main campus in Preston. There may also be clinical sessions at other local training centres where you will treat patients under the supervision of Specialists and Consultants.
DX4058 - Clinical Prosthodontics (80 Credits)
To build upon the skills and knowledge acquired in the first year, for the safe and appropriate delivery of prosthodontic treatment within a primary dental care environment.

DX4027 - Research Strategy (40 Credits)
This on-line module will extend the knowledge gained from DX4017 and develop the student’s skills in identifying and appraising scientific studies to inform their own and colleagues practice, on the basis of best available evidence. Students will learn the key stages in developing focused research questions, constructing systematic searches, and producing a research proposal. Understanding different study designs and recognising their limitations will allow for deeper critical appraisal of both the design and the evidence produced. This knowledge will be applied in developing and implementing their own research proposals and data synthesis. This module leads to the submission of an 8,000 word professional project.

It will provide authentic clinical training and education, delivered both online and face-to-face that will prepare you to provide safe and appropriate prosthodontic treatment as part of your clinical practice.
Our MClinDent Prosthodontics programme provides the busy General Dental Practitioner with a full-time educational route to acquire the skills and knowledge required of a Dentist with enhanced skills. This programme focuses on contemporary practice, teaching evidence-based principles and systems to ensure an optimal outcome for the patient and practitioner.
During the course (2 years) you will be expected to attend teaching sessions within the School of Dentistry on the main UCLan Preston Campus, though some sessions will be timetabled in the UCLan Dental Clinic, where you will be supported to assess, undertake and ultimately lead in clinical treatment. To accompany the study days, much of the course content, including lecture notes, PowerPoint slides, videos of lectures and assignments will be delivered to you via the University’s eLearn system allowing you to both prepare work for study days and undertake additional work independently from your home location.
Work in the early part of the course will comprise plenary lectures and practical sessions in our state-of-the-art phantom head facility, and work on pig’s head and similar systems. As you move through the first year of the course you will progress to working on live patients under close supervision in the UCLan Dental Clinic. Here skills will be developed and assessed through Direct Observations of Procedural Skills (DOPS). The academic underpinning that supports this discipline will be developed though presentations, directed reading and case-based discussions, which you and others in the group will be expected to prepare and lead. Group sizes are generally small leading to an informal and supportive learning environment where you can ensure that your own learning needs are being met.
We must of course have assessments and examinations - these are designed to allow you to monitor your progress and guide your learning as well as testing your core knowledge and skills at regular intervals throughout the programme. Assessments focus on your higher level skills of diagnosis and planning, rather than simply remembering facts. Typical assessments would include analysis of given clinical cases, case presentations, practical tests, written examinations and critical essays.

This course will involve you working with vulnerable groups of individuals, including children. In order to ensure that the University offers places on their programmes to suitable candidates you will all be required to obtain a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service clearance (formerly termed CRB). We will be able to guide you through this process once you have been offered a conditional place of study at the University of Central Lancashire.
It is important to note that should your Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check prove to be unsatisfactory for the purpose of the course you have applied to, your offer of a place for that course may be withdrawn. If you have already enrolled on a course and your DBS check subsequently discloses a criminal conviction, you may be required to withdraw from the course even if you have already started. If you are aware that your DBS check will disclose a previous conviction, please contact the course leader for advice as not all convictions may preclude you from continuing with the course.
Postgraduate qualifications in dentistry are not regulated by the General Dental Council in the UK. For successful students who wish to continue on the specialist pathway there will be the possibility of a further years training in order to help prepare you to sit the Membership in Prosthodontics examination of the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh.
Modules DX4017 and DX4027 are delivered and assessed online.
The clinical modules, DX4057 and DX4058 are assessed with a blend of course work, written assessments, practical assessments including direct observations whilst treating patients, and seen and unseen clinical case assessments.
The teaching faculty is led by Professor Dominic Stewardson, a highly experienced Consultant in Restorative Dentistry, he has been the Course Leader at UCLan for a number of years.
