Gain an advanced understanding of the theoretical and practical sides of strength and conditioning. You’ll gain the skills to jump start your career in developing a client or athlete’s physical performance.

On this vocationally focused degree, you’ll learn an about the various aspects of human performance including anatomy, physiology, training theory, and common sports injuries. We’ll support you to gain real-world practical experience through our placement schemes, where our students get the chance to assist with performance testing professional teams within high-performance sport.

You’ll be taught by an enthusiastic team of qualified coaches, researchers and academics with key industry knowledge and contacts – all from the cutting-edge sport science. ­Our high-quality course is accredited by multiple professional bodies. What’s more, our students have access to numerous industry-standard facilities, including our Sports Analysis Suite Sports Biomechanics and Sport Physiology Laboratories.

What you'll do

Course Delivery

Following the pandemic, we have found that some courses benefit from a blended learning and teaching approach. Therefore, the majority of your teaching will be face-to-face on campus aside from a small amount of online teaching where we have learnt it works best.

  • This course is endorsed by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). The NSCA a is the world-leading membership organisation for strength and conditioning practitioners and their Education Recognition Program (ERP) distinguishes accredited academic institutions for their educational programs that have met, and continue to meet, educational guidelines recommended by the NSCA.
  • Our facilities have achieved a BASES Laboratory Accreditation, providing a mark of quality assurance that illustrates the laboratory has undergone meticulous inspection by BASES and that high professional standards of practice have been achieved.
  • This course is aligned with the Entry and General Management professional standards outlined by CIMSPA, the professional development body for the UK's sport and physical activity sector. As a member, you will be entitled to attend seminars and meetings and learn from industry professionals. The Health and Fitness pathway on the course allows students the option to meet professional standards in Gym Instruction, Personal Training, Health Navigator and Working with People with Long Term Conditions.

Future careers

Our Strength and Conditioning BSc (Hons) degree was designed with one aim in mind: to give you the skills and knowledge you’ll need to become a specialist strength and conditioning coach.

The modules you’ll study over your time with us offer a mixture of classroom theory and practical skills. Crucially, you’ll also have the chance to gain some real-world experience, thanks to the variety of volunteering and internship opportunities you’ll have here – whether with professional sports clubs or undergraduate research internships. You could even gain some career-boosting skills on a student exchange programme, with one of our partner universities in the United States, Canada and Spain.

So, by the time you graduate, you should have all the competencies you’ll need to begin an exciting career as a strength and conditioning coach. Many of our graduates have taken that path, while others have found careers in performance analysis, rehabilitation and fitness, as well as education. Alternatively, you could continue your studies with our popular Strength and Conditioning MSc degree, or pursue research opportunities via an MPhil or PhD.
