What you'll do

  • Develop both on and off the field whilst gaining a recognised qualification. You'll understand chronic diseases including heart disease, diabetes, obesity, cancer and metabolic diseases. And, you'll learn how to create effective exercise and nutritional interventions.
  • Alongside receiving professional football coaching the course offers the opportunity to study abroad. You can support real world research and gain relevant work experience based on the sector you’d like to work in.
  • You'll study on one of only six courses in the UK endorsed by the Sport and Exercise Nutrition Register. Get taught by Registered Nutritionists, and Clinical and Exercise Physiologists. You'll learn from experienced industry professionals.

In year 3 you can choose from two stands:

Human Nutrition strand: Nutritional Biochemistry (Compulsory) plus 2 from:

  • Food Allergy and Intolerance
  • Foodborne Disease
  • Public Health: Delivery & Action
  • Professional Work experience 2

Health and Fitness strand: Exercise Referral (Compulsory) plus 2 from:

  • Public Health: Delivery & Action
  • Professional Work experience 2
  • Training Prescription for the Elite Athlete

Course delivery

Following the pandemic, we have found that some courses benefit from a blended learning and teaching approach. Therefore, the majority of your teaching will be face-to-face on campus aside from a small amount of online teaching where we have learnt it works best.

Accreditations

  • This course is aligned with the Entry and General Management professional standards outlined by CIMSPA, the professional development body for the UK's sport and physical activity sector. As a member, you will be entitled to attend seminars and meetings and learn from industry professionals. The Health and Fitness pathway on the course allows students the option to meet professional standards in Gym Instruction, Personal Training, Health Navigator and Working with People with Long Term Conditions.
  • Our facilities have achieved a BASES Laboratory Accreditation, providing a mark of quality assurance that illustrates the laboratory has undergone meticulous inspection by BASES and that high professional standards of practice have been achieved.
  • The SENR outlines professional standards and competences for Sport and Exercise Nutritionists. In so doing it guides the development of Sport and Exercise Nutrition curriculum, provides career development pathways for aspiring Sport and Exercise Nutritionist.

Industry links

  • Tracing their history back to 1874 they are one of the oldest clubs in the UK. We work closely with them to combine academic learning and development in a professional football club environment.

Future careers in football 

You’ll develop a breadth of knowledge on our Nutrition and Exercise Sciences BSc (Hons) FPDP programme. This can help you chart a future in research, healthcare, sport, food industry and teaching. Meanwhile, you'll still play football to a high level with the support of a professional club.
