Our MSc Sport Coach Developer programme helps you develop the knowledge, skills, and capabilities you need to support the development of expert coaches.

This course is delivered online/distance learning and is currently subject to validation. As such, the course structure and content may be changed to enable the University to deliver a better quality of educational experience to students

The programme aims to contribute to the learning and professional development of those working in sport whose primary responsibility is to support coaches (i.e. coach developers). By taking part in the programme, you’ll be encouraged to examine your own professional practice when supporting coaches and explore issues which are meaningful to you in your role.

As part of a community of professional practice, over two years, you will engage in several interdisciplinary modules led by staff with significant coach development expertise. Curriculum and content will be carefully negotiated, while assessment opportunities will be authentic, embedded, and allow you to produce outputs (including research) which will push practice in the field forward.

The programme has been developed in consultation with leading industry experts, and both national and international sports organisations. The programme has been created to meet both the CIMSPA professional standard (for the role of coach developer) and enable participants to graduate with International Council for Coaching Excellence (ICCE) chartered coach developer status. Both endorsements are pending approval.

Module overview

This module aims to critically examine the origins and influence of our values and beliefs and how they translate into specific behaviours and applied practices. Factors that influence self-awareness will be explored in relation to personal and educational philosophies and coach development behaviours. The module will also focus on leadership behaviour as well as pedagogical tools for effective coach leadership and mentoring. These concepts will be critically explored with the focus of personal and professional development.

This module aims to provide you with the opportunity to explore and critically discuss key aspects of contemporary coach development practice. It aims to equip you with a higher order knowledge base to make informed and effective decisions about the design and delivery of appropriate coach development strategies and activities. In doing so, it will encourage you to apply your multidisciplinary learning to your coach development role and provide both theoretical and practical frameworks upon which to base coach development activities and programmes.

The aim of this module is to develop your intellectual ability with respect to critical analysis and conceptual thinking by undertaking an in-depth investigation into an applied area of interest in coach development. It provides the opportunity to apply and develop knowledge and critical understanding, research skills and competencies within your applied context and enables you to take control of your own intellectual development (with the support of supervisors), through the process of research, analysis and presentation.

Academic expertise

The programme is comprised of four modules, two delivered in the first year and two in the second year. The programme is kept current to make sure all content is up to date, and you are in line with any new professional developments.

You’ll develop your knowledge, skills, and capabilities through online workshops that involve small-group learning and a context-driven, student-centred approach. You’ll develop your knowledge and understanding via realistic case studies, debate, and shared insight into your practice-based learning. All teaching will be live and interactive, and you will need to engage in tutor and self-directed learning outside of sessions to succeed.

There is an emphasis on ‘real life’ assessments including project-based learning and learning as part of an applied community of practice that will enhance your coach development skills and expertise. You’ll have the opportunity to test your knowledge and skill development through a wide range of assessment tasks, including practice-based learning assessment, written assignments, reflection, case studies, professional discussions and project work. These are summative assessment tasks (which you must pass in order to pass each module).

In addition, these tasks involve ongoing opportunities for formative assessment, which includes peer assessment and tutor support and regular debrief sessions of practical experiences. These opportunities are central to your learning, as you will receive feedback that is relevant both to your development and to the summative assessment tasks.

All the core members of the teaching team are experienced coach developers in a range of settings and sports and are research active in the field. Our staff bring their expertise and applied experience to life for students in the teaching sessions. Outside experts and industry professionals will also be brought in to complement and enhance different modules during the year.

Whilst on the course, you will have timetabled sessions which will provide experiences of working in partnership with other coach development professionals. Learning about, with and from students in other contexts and settings will help enhance your own real-world practice. You’ll learn about the crossovers in coach development settings, as well as distinct differences and boundaries within the profession in different national and international sporting contexts. This will further develop your skills in communication and collaborative working to provide optimal development activities for the coaches you work with.
