Carers Bursary

If you need extra support because you have unpaid caring responsibilities alongside your studies.

Key Facts

Type of award: Bursary
Value: £500
Application deadline/process: Online form (see below for details)

We offer a range of support and services to help all students, but especially if you need a little extra assistance, because you are a carer for someone. Support offered includes a Bursary and a Carers Support Plan so that academics are aware of the circumstances and adjustments can be implemented if required. You can apply once you have enrolled onto your course and you would need to provide evidence of your circumstances.

How is the value received?

The bursary will be paid as a lump sum in one instalment for that year.

A carer is defined as “anyone who cares, unpaid, for a friend or family member who due to illness, disability, a mental health problem or an addiction cannot cope without their support. A carer is not a parent, unless they are caring for a disabled child, nor does it include caring responsibilities as part of a voluntary placement or paid work (e.g. child/pet minding) whether inside or outside the student’s course.”

How to apply

Once you have enrolled onto your course you may access the online application form which will be available here nearer the time.

The deadline for applying is 9 months after the start of the academic year in which you apply to your course, e.g. if your course starts in September, you need to apply before the end of May of that academic year.
