Physical Education & Sport

You'll understand the link between physical activity and mental health. This will highlight the value of leading an active lifestyle at an individual and population level. You'll also understand the challenges of adopting and maintaining a healthy lifestyle in the modern day. You'll reflect on your own experiences and beliefs in relation to health and wellbeing.

You'll learn about the sports coaching industry through hands on experience and focused reflection. You will increase your knowledge, develop skills, and clarify values to support you in coaching others. You'll also connect theories and knowledge learned in workshops to real-world sports coaching and educational environments.

You'll examine the connections between PE, sport and society. You'll understand how social stratification can affect people's experience of PE and sport. This includes gender, sexuality, race, social class and disability. This will help you understand how different people engage with PE and sport across their lives.

The aim of the module is to develop the professional characteristics and requirements for academic study. We will develop your critical thinking skills, and introduce the tenets of research that will guide and challenge future practice.

The aim of the module is to develop a practical and theoretical understanding of teaching and learning in physical education. You'll develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to plan, deliver and evaluate elementary learning opportunities for others. It will invoke an understanding of how a curriculum informs teaching practices and how a teacher manages the learning environment. 

This module aims to investigate the pedagogical principles surrounding the applied teaching of physical education. It considers a variety of associated issues that affect learning and analyses strategies that can be employed to support the delivery of high-quality physical education in schools. Through a module placement, the module aims to give you authentic experiences of the actualities and realities of life in a teaching and learning environment.

Develop your knowledge of sport and physical education for disabled people. You'll explore the emergence of disabled sport, the current provision, and the barriers and enablers which exist for disabled people. You'll critique a range of social, political and ethical issues. This is underpinned by sociological concepts like the medical and social models of disability, social relational understanding of disability, ableism and disablism.

Examine a range of physical education and sport issues through a sociological lense. You'll start by looking at power and inequality, applying theory to gain a deeper understanding of these issues. You will also look at identity and embodiment, reflecting on your own and others' experience of physical education and sport.

Develop your research skills, as well as your understanding of physical education and sport. You'll understand research paradigms and different ways to generate data. You'll also consider the ethical and methodological dilemmas present in research.

You'll have the opportunity to investigate a range of political, social and economic factors that underpin international aid and development through sport in a global context. You will look at how both national and international development agencies impact and limit sport for development.

This module aims to investigate the application of theory into practice in the context of outdoor learning. It considers a variety of associated issues that affect group development and analyses strategies that can be employed to support the delivery of high-quality outdoor learning in a variety of settings. The module also provides opportunities for you to put their understanding into practice through work placements and enables you to reflect upon personal learning opportunities from a course-wide perspective and how these support the development of practice knowledge and CPD strategies.

The aim of the dissertation is to provide an opportunity for you to pursue an in-depth study on a topic of your own choice which is related to your substantive areas of study. You'll work independently, under limited supervision, in order to develop and demonstrate your academic skills and abilities. 

This module lets you encounter and address the challenges of a consultancy project involving research, critical thinking and problem solving. You'll focus on engagement with an organisation, group or individual and you'll use your skills to look at an identified client issue.

Develop your knowledge of contemporary practice in physical education and school sport. You'll consider the personal and professional issues that impact teachers' conceptions and delivery of lessons. You'll also appraise physical education environments and how this affects teaching. We'll also cover the changing education environment, PE teacher employability and career development.

Develop your understanding of Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) in relation to physical education and sport. You'll critique issues related to SEND in both mainstream and special school settings. You'll explore a range of learning and physical disabilities, so you can understand how they may impact physcial education for both the teacher and child. You'll also analyse current research and contemporary issues in this area.

Critically examine the ways politics and power operate within sport and physical education. You'll reflect on the political value of sport and physical education, as well as the political processes which lie within them. You'll apply relevant political and sociological theory, with a focus on power-relations in both these settings.

Understand the contemporary issues related to developing and promoting physical activity, psychological wellbeing and health living. You'll review a snapshot of the current health of the nation and explore the barriers to healthy, active lifestyles. You'll assess current health promotion practices, as well as recommendations for physical activity and diet. You'll also reflect on your own and others' physical literacy in everyday life.
