This module aims to provide you with education studies knowledge, and skills. You'll get an overview of debates and issues surrounding learners in the education system, and to equip you with knowledge of both historical and current policy and practice.

The aims of this module are to provide you with knowledge and understanding of inclusion, exclusion and diversity in education. You'll investigate the topic of equal access to educational opportunities and the different theories and concepts surrounding this debate.

This module will allow you to explore some of the key features of the period including the engagement with classic literature and myth. You will be encouraged to evaluate and analyse a range of Renaissance literature encompassing drama, poetry and non-fictional writing.

This module aims to aid personal and professional development, while honing writing skills. You will consider the differences between academic writing and creative/marketing/plain text forms. You will learn about punctuation for professional purposes, as well as conventions for essay writing and referencing.

This module is an introduction to the analysis of sounds, words and sentences. You will explore features of your own accent and learn how to represent Received Pronunciation in symbols. You will learn about traditional grammatical terminology, as taught on the National Curriculum for English, and how to analyse sentences into their component parts.

Enable you to practice a variety of techniques for writing fiction and drama and reflect critically on your writing process Develop a critical and theoretical understanding of the ‘principles of story’ in historical and contemporary context Develop your ability to read, interpret and evaluate contemporary fiction and drama in light of the way it conforms to or challenges these principles Enable you to recognise the connections between fiction and drama as well as the unique challenges and possibilities of writing for page or performance.

This module will enable you to learn through the experience of observing education in action. Upon experiencing teaching in practice, you will be able to reflect on your own performance and apply learnt techniques to improve your professionalism.

The module introduces you to a range of American literary, and cultural texts and practices such as fiction, non-fiction, poetry, drama, film, television, and music. Focusing on the areas of identity and representation, you'll explore America’s national ideologies as they are constructed and contested in US popular culture, from early Native American creation myths to the tempestuous writings and music of the contemporary multicultural USA.

The concepts and ideas within literature and text will be introduced in this module. You'll develop close reading skills and focus on the importance of interpretations sensitive to the role of context in all its forms. You will examine texts using a range of strategies to provide a useful introduction to the field of literacy theory.

You will build on work undertaken in EN1215 Reading Texts, Literary Theory. You'll get the opportunity to develop the critical skills necessary for advanced undergraduate work. You'll become aware of a variety of critical approaches to the study of English Literature and the existence of a debate between and amongst these approaches.

The aim of this module is to introduce you to key themes from socially-minded areas of linguistics and make you aware of the existence of linguistic variation in society. You will also be introduced to the idea that language use can influence and construct meanings and identities.

This module will explore different approaches to ‘meaning’, focusing on aspects of meaning at the level of text and discourse. The module will explore the relation between linguistic expressions, language users and contexts. You will apply knowledge of critical discourse analysis, conversation analysis and rhetorical theory to the analysis of short texts (newspapers, political discourse, forensic texts, etc.).

You'll explore the psychology of learning and the development of eclectic practice in education. This module will look at the three main psychological schools of theory about teaching and learning, and also introduce you to the practical application of theory in teaching.

This module aims to familiarise you with the debated aspects of diversity and inclusion, and analyse educational opportunities for learners with SEND. You'll also learn about other dimensions of inequality, and assess the effectiveness of government policies and school strategies on the education of learners with SEND.

In this module you will have the opportunity to take part in a work placement of your choice. The experience you gain will greatly benefit your studies and enhance your employability skills. You will reflect on your experiences in a final report.

This module enhances your academic writing, critical thinking, and research abilities, focusing on skills like critical analysis, evidence synthesis, proper source utilization, and theory application. Successful completion is required if you're planning to take the research-based dissertation module.

This module will provide you with an exciting experience to revisit your favourite childhood tales. The major European collections of tales, such as those of Perrault, Grimm and Andersen, will provide the main focus of study, but non-European collections will also be considered.

This module will examine a selection of poems and novels from the late-eighteenth century through to the First World War. This will enhance your skills in assessing useful resources in print and digital formats.

On this module you'll be introduced to the 'graphic novel'. Emphasis will be placed on the close reading of these texts and the different aesthetic strategies used by these writers to develop a broad understanding of the genre. You'll also look at the criticisms of this genre, generating a critical framework for addressing the different aspects of its storytelling.

This module aims to familiarise you with psycholinguistics, lines of enquiry, and research methods. It enables you to understand what the study of first language acquisition and disordered communication reveals about the storage and processing of language and develop your analytical, researching, and writing skills.

In this module you'll examine how language and society are interconnected, focusing on factors that lead to linguistic variation. Topics include regional and social variation, language attitudes, multilingualism, accents, and language planning, birth, shift, and death. You'll also study the linguistic details of the accents and dialects of English and reflect on notions of standardisation and correctness.

This module introduces you to the concept of ‘power’, and the way that power informs both institutional and non-institutional human interaction. You'll explore legitimate and illegitimate uses of power and the relationship between power, language and social institutions. You will study a variety of frameworks for analysing power as a tool for analysing a variety of texts.

This module builds on LG1222 Sounds and Structures, developing your knowledge of the language system itself. You'll develop your understanding of the core sentence types of English and learn how to diagram the underlying structure of any given sentence. There will also be opportunities to develop your knowledge of the morphology and phonology of English.

Our specific creative writing dissertation module will give you the chance to showcase all your skills that you have developed over the entirety of your course. You will produce an independent piece of work on your chosen genre by applying critical thinking to extensive research processes.

On this module you'll develop your knowledge and skills of writing for science fiction and fantasy. You'll gain a theoretical and historical understanding of the genres and how to critically approach texts. You will be expected to familiarise yourself with a range of critical material and different fantasy and science fiction short stories, and to show evidence of your understanding in class discussions and your written work.

This module enables you to engage in experiential learning through time spent in an educational setting, to critically reflect upon and assess the relevance of your observations with broader aspects of educational policy and practice and equip you with experience and insights to enhance your employability.

This module explores the relationship between learning, curriculum, assessment, and how each informs the other. You'll assess the concept of valid knowledge, scrutinise teaching and learning theories in relation to the curriculum, and explore the nature of a core curriculum across various educational sectors.

This first part of this module takes in canonical texts from the modernist period, to ensure that you have an understanding of the work of major figures in early twentieth century literature. You will examine the cultural and historical contexts in which the texts are produced, focussing on formal innovation across different kinds of literature.

This module will introduce you to Gothic literature with diverse examples, improving analytical skills across media and deepening historical understanding. It refines research and writing by engaging with non-Eurocentric Gothic, postcolonial themes, and the Neo-Gothic's relevance.

This module studies how the legacies of European colonialism and imperialism have shaped our unequal, neo-colonial world. You'll investigate colonial ideology and history in texts and culture leading to the exploration of later postcolonial writing and culture. These cultural texts will be contextualised with important postcolonial theoretical concepts, such as ‘writing back,’ hybridity, the construction of race, intersectionality and diaspora.

The English Literature Dissertation module allows you to pursue an independent area of scholarly research within the field of ‘Literature.’ The dissertation takes the form of an extended piece of written work (7500-10,000 words) on a topic chosen by you with approval of the dissertation tutor.

The aim of this module is to introduce you to the concept of 'power'. You will have the opportunity to examine the effect of power on and in language.

Clinical linguistics examines language disorders and delays (acquired and congenital). This module covers various language-related pathologies like auditory processing disorder, aphasia, autism, and more. These pathologies and their causes are discussed, providing insights into the cognitive foundations of language.

This module introduces you to the practices of argument identification, analysis, reconstruction, analysis and evaluation, and critical thinking. You'll cover standard argument schemes and rhetorical analysis techniques, including the use of ethos, pathos, and logos for enhancing persuasive political discourse.

The aims of this module are to examine the contribution of Linguistics to the teaching of English Language as a first language. The module focuses primarily on the current policies and approaches to the teaching of literacy and English in the compulsory sector in the UK. 

You'll undertake a research project, which typically – though not necessarily – involves the collection and analysis of linguistic data. This includes producing a textual commentary, analysis or critique. A literature review or similar is deemed to be original if it constitutes a critical synthesis not already available from any single existing source.
