Interested in studying education and how children learn? Want to train to be a teacher in the future and specialise in English? Our degree in English and Education is an ideal route into a range of professional roles.

This course allows you to take your interest in English and Education to degree level. You will study educational systems from the early years right through to university and lifelong learning.

You’ll look at issues that affect learners, the impact of ethnicity, deprivation, gender, disability and learning difficulties, sexuality, mental health. You'll consider those who have experienced bullying or abuse. You’ll also explore the role of teachers, of families and other professionals, you’ll study learning theories and the curriculum.

You’ll choose from options in language, literature or creative writing - based on your interest in the primary or secondary curriculum. From the classics of literature to the fairy tale, or from political speeches to cinema to advertising. You'll explore a range of literary and linguistic styles and approaches. You will also cover topics in language development, approaches to literacy, as well as debates in the curriculum for English.

What you'll do

Combining English with Education offers routes into teacher training. Also, into non-teaching professional careers or postgraduate research.
You can combine your study of Education with English Literature and/or English Language and incorporate modules in creative writing.
You'll spend time on placements, working alongside other professionals. This will be highly valued by potential future employers.

Studying our BA (Hons) Education and English course open the doors to a career in education, as well as offering routes into a range of other options including journalism, publishing, arts administration, theatre and advertising.

Throughout the course you’ll be supported by our academic advisers and the University’s Careers service to undertake further study, whether that’s on towards teacher training, or further postgraduate study. You could opt to study our Master programme in Professional Practice, or go on to a Professional Doctorate in Education.

Some of our recent graduates have gone into professions including teaching, careers advice and guidance roles, community support, social work, learning mentors, the civil service, librarians, and pastoral roles in education.

When you graduate from this course you’ll leave us with the skills and understanding that will make you a valuable asset to a variety of employers within and beyond the field of education. You could work in film and television, information technology, journalism, law, marketing, international charitable organisations, culture and diversity roles, youth work, government officer or civil servant.

Throughout the course you’ll attend a mixture of lectures, group seminars, one-to-one tutorials and practical sessions. Independent study is an important aspect of this degree. On occasion you’ll be asked to work in small groups and to go out and research key topics.

During the course you’ll have the opportunity to undertake at least one placement each year in an educational setting, this will help you to gain vital work experience. If you enjoy these you may choose a placement each year, in different settings.

We’ll assess you through your coursework. This will include a varied mix of essays, individual and group presentations, critical reviews of research, reflective learning diaries, portfolios, poster presentations, developing strategies and lesson plans, and designing small-scale research proposals.

We’ll also teach you a range of skills which will prove useful in your future career. You’ll learn how to solve problems, collaborate in teams, present confidently to an audience, critically assess policies and literature in the field of Education and English.
