Tom Craig

BA (Hons) Event Management, 2016

Tom Craig, Operations Manager of Get Staffed, graduated in 2016 with a first-class BA (Hons) Event Management degree. It wasn’t always an easy journey but his hard work and determination brought him to where he is today.

Originally from Preston, Tom found UCLan after failing college and university the first time around. Whilst working part-time alongside his previous university course in Newcastle, Tom stumbled across event management and discovered his passion for the industry.

“I tried a few different options before starting at UCLan, which meant I was ready to face the challenge with more maturity,” Tom said.

Tom really enjoyed the different topics he was taught at University including; strategic management, enterprise and hospitality, and says that these subjects taught him “a variety of transferable skills.” Tom believes that “too many people learn and don’t then implement their skills into their job role”.

Speaking about his time at UCLan, Tom said: “Throughout my studies I gained so much knowledge and experience, we did a variety of live events and had the opportunity to put the theory we learnt into practice."

"My time at UCLan really taught me a lot about the industry, myself and most importantly, about life. I wouldn’t change the way I’ve done things as I believe it has helped become the person I am today.

“My studies and work experience really helped me streamline where my interests were, especially after undertaking my placement year which taught me about full-time work, allowed me to work on my people skills and gave me an idea of how a business within the event industry worked.”

After graduation, a friend of Tom’s found that the event industry was facing many challenges with entry-level staff, particularly with agency staff, including low skill and low staff morale. This lead to a lack of reliability and a high turnover of staff for many event companies.

In order to close this gap, the Managing Director of Get Staffed UK decided that he would provide agency staff who were exceptionally well trained and motivated by ensuring that he was giving back to them, providing incentives and clear channels of progression. When Tom came on board, he was brought in on a supervisory role, heading up events with large clients throughout the North West and ensuring that the team he brought with him were working to the standards expected from the venue.

Tom’s role has gone from strength to strength as has worked his way up from an events officer to an events manager and is now the Operations Manager, where he works very closely with the Managing Director of the business. Tom has helped the business to grow and develop, bringing in new clients using his excellent communication skills and contacts made throughout his time at UCLan.

“Throughout my placement and time at University I met a wide range of industry professionals, which is extremely beneficial to where I am now. Graduating with a first was something I never believed to be possible but it shows hard work and dedication really does pay off. Now I’m trying to implement this same work ethic in Get Staffed UK, to ensure the company reaches its full potential, I know it can.”
