After graduating from the University of Central Lancashire with a MSc Oral Surgery, Jonathan Liew has secured a highly sought-after post as a Specialty Registrar in Oral Surgery.
Jonathan Liew decided to study MSc Oral Surgery because he has always had a passion for this subject. Oral surgery involves the treatment of all age groups and the management of dentally anxious and medically complex patients.
Talking about his postgraduate degree choice, Jonathan said: I came across the MSc in Oral Surgery offered by UCLan. After reviewing the course contents and structure, I made a decision to enrol on this postgraduate programme to widen my clinical and academic knowledge so I could embark on a career in oral surgery.”
He continued: “I definitely made the right decision in opting to study the MSc Oral Surgery at UCLan as it provided me ample opportunities to pursue my ambition of becoming an oral surgeon. The state-of-the-art clinical facilities within the dental school cultivated an enjoyable, pleasant learning environment for postgraduate dental students.

In 2021, Jonathan secured his dream role as a Specialty Registrar (StR) in Oral Surgery. Reflecting on how his postgraduate experience helped him, Jonathan said: “The tremendous hard work I put in has finally paid off. The MSc I obtained has definitely helped in terms of boosting my confidence in my daily job.”
In the future, Jonathan would like to pursue further training to become a Consultant in Oral Surgery as part of his long-term career goal.
Reflecting on his lasting memories at UCLan, Jonathan said: “The fantastic clinical and academic support I received from the wonderful staff at UCLan’s School of Medicine and Dentistry was second to none. The main contribution of the MSc was the confidence it gave me in my daily jobs, allowing me to gain tremendous experience clinically and academically, subsequently making me a well-rounded and competent clinician at the dental hospital as well as community dental service settings.”
When asked about what advice he would give to current or prospective students wanting to do something similar, Jonathan said: “Never give up in doing what you want to do, always chase for it and you will succeed eventually. The fruit of your own hard work is the sweetest! Always believe in yourself, work hard for your ambition and you will achieve it when the right time comes. Do not be defeated by failures. I can reassure you will see the light at the end of the tunnel.”
