Outdoor Adventure Leadership

This module aims to provide you with the underpinning knowledge and theory applicable leading and managing risk in an outdoor adventure leadership context. A range of areas will be covered including contemporary theories of leadership, risk management, the role of risk, law and legislation and environmental considerations.

This module aims to develop a contextualised understanding of how we learn and the outdoors as a natural learning environment. It provides the opportunity to reflect upon your own learning experiences within the outdoor context. A range of subject areas will be covered including environmental and lifestyle changes from ancestral to modern living, learning theories, domains of learning and reflective practice. Discussion, debate and practical application will allow you to demonstrate understanding of the wide-ranging concepts, theories and philosophies.

This module aims to provide you with the underpinning knowledge and skills applicable to teaching and coaching within the outdoor context through engagement with relevant research literature. A range of subject areas will be covered including outdoor pedagogies, Forest Schools, effective coaching practice and critical thinking. Discussion, debate and practical application will allow you to demonstrate their understanding of the wide-ranging theories, concepts and strategies.

This module aims to provide the underpinning knowledge and skills applicable to the outdoor adventure leadership context. A range of subject areas will be covered including: risk management, leadership and reflective practice, educational and environmental considerations.

This module aims to provide you with underpinning knowledge and skills applicable to coaching in the outdoor adventure context. A range of coaching models will be discussed with specific focus on their constituent parts. Discussion, debate and practical application will allow you to demonstrate understanding of a wide range of theories, concepts and techniques.

The module focuses on the synergy of practice and research, in context, by focusing on quantitative and qualitative research methods and data gathering approaches. The module will enable you to generate research ideas that have a vocational value and will be able to construct hypotheses, conduct literature reviews, design effective experimental approaches and present research findings in real world settings. As well as developing transferable personal research skills in the module, it also underpins a range of research modules at Level 6.

This module requires you work as part of a group to complete an expedition of their choice. The expedition will bring together practical and theoretical elements studied through this module, and develop your understanding of environmental stewardship methods for all sectors of the outdoors. The project will take the form of planning and undertaking an expedition. A core ethos, clear aims and objectives should be incorporated to provide a focus for the expedition.

This module aims to investigate the application of theory into practice in the context of outdoor learning. It considers a variety of associated issues that affect group development and analyses strategies that can be employed to support the delivery of high-quality outdoor learning in a variety of settings. The module also provides opportunities for you to put their understanding into practice through work placements and enables you to reflect upon personal learning opportunities from a course-wide perspective and how these support the development of practice knowledge and CPD strategies.

This module aims to build upon the research methods module and develop your ability to carry out independent research projects with limited supervision. You'll work in small groups to consider a research theme and design an appropriate research approach to investigate.

This module builds on the knowledge gained during participating in expeditions and changes the focus from journeying to static fieldwork for a group. You'll gain the knowledge and skills needed through hands-on learning, how to maintain safe working practices in remote areas. The module will include undertaking a five-day fieldwork project in a remote area as a small group and as such will develop transferable team-working, time and work management skills. Your responses to the pressures and challenges will be an important part of their personal development.

The module aims to develop a contextualised understanding of the physical and physiological demands of outdoor adventurous activities and the influence of modern lifestyles on overall health and performance. Key philosophies, theories/concepts and strategies will be discussed within a range of outdoor adventure contexts. You'll develop practical and theoretical awareness of physical preparation for outdoor adventure and explore links between outdoor adventurous lifestyles and health.

The aim of the dissertation is to provide an opportunity for you to pursue an in-depth study on a topic of your own choice which is related to your substantive areas of study. You'll work independently, under limited supervision, in order to develop and demonstrate your academic skills and abilities. 

Do you want to start your own business venture? This module will encourage you to think conceptually and critically about the role of the individual in developing enterprise and new venture creation through individual self-reflection and analysis of various entrepreneurs.

This module lets you encounter and address the challenges of a consultancy project involving research, critical thinking and problem solving. You'll focus on engagement with an organisation, group or individual and you'll use your skills to look at an identified client issue.

This module aims to extend your critical appraisal of the role of leadership in organisational and individual contexts and to develop outdoor practitioners with contemporary awareness of leadership, management and social justice issues. By exposing you to current and international perspectives on leading for change in the outdoors this module aims to develop critical assessment of strategies and models of behavior change. Through consideration of current changes within the industry and critical evaluation of the role of the outdoor adventure leader in these changes you'll consolidate and contextualise leading for change in a chosen professional outdoor context.

This module aims to provide you with the skills to apply to practice key concepts and theories of psychology in outdoor remote environments. This module draws upon industry best practice and provide you with further skills training in response and management in the field.

The module aims to develop your ability to analyse and apply coaching practice from a psychological perspective. Key theories/concepts and techniques will be discussed within a range of outdoor adventure contexts.

This module aims to extend your critical appraisal of the role of leadership in individual contexts and to develop outdoor practitioners with contemporary awareness of leadership and social justice issues. By exposing you to current and international perspectives on leading for change in the outdoors this module aims to develop critical assessment of strategies and models of behavior change.

This module aims to extend the critical historical origin for the emergence of adventurous travel. You'll develop an understanding and critically discuss central research questions about adventure travel. The module takes an autoethnographic approach, as you undertake a multi-journey and explore current theory and concepts of adventure travel.

This module will enable you to use critical reflection as a learning tool to articulate learning from experience in an industry setting relevant to their programme of study. To critically evaluate your employability needs in relation to that job market and identify any skills gap areas for future development

This module aims to provide you with the skills to apply and appraise key concepts/theories for participant improvement within the outdoor adventure context. Focus will be paid to the areas of coaching behaviour, coach-participant interactions and individual participant requirements.
