Media & Television Production

You will critically examine a range of media forms including television, print, music, new media and film. You will consider the core characteristics and frameworks that allow audiences to make sense of these media. You will learn about a variety of research methods including semiotic, discourse and content analysis.

In this module you will learn to operate single camera and audio-visual equipment. You will develop an understanding of pre-production, production and post production techniques. You will also develop skills in planning, organisation, communication and project management.

The aims of this module are to introduce you to the specialist areas of multi camera production, narrative theories, audio production and digital production skills.

This module starts by exploring the formal features of a film, TV, and new media genre. Analytical frameworks will help you compare, assess programs, and create your own.

Workshops focus on experimentation, idea generation, and active participation. Tutorials are flexible, with writing exercises assigned for in-class or between-session completion.

This module aims to introduce a particular way of understanding media that treats film, TV and Media as a mode of thought in its own right. Through the viewing and discussion of a range key productions, you will be encouraged to develop a critical awareness of the ways in which writers, directors and creatives can explore deep-seated issues and philosophical questions. For example: the difference between appearance and reality, the nature of consciousness, the importance of memory in relation to the self and identity, the impact of technology on modern society, and the place of film and TV in popular culture.

This module aims to develop your skills in planning, producing, synthesising and enhancing audio-visual sequences.

In this module, you will consider how your subject-specific skills and knowledge can be applied.

This application will form part of an extended ‘portfolio’ which conveys your ability to function as a critical and proficient practitioner in your respective field.

Consequently, the content of scheduled activities will adapt to your needs Tutors will act as ‘expert consultants’ to critically advise and support the development of ideas and solutions.

This module teaches you how to create products and services for actual commercial clients, guiding you from idea inception to delivery. You'll also cost projects for market value awareness.

Emphasis is also on enhancing interpersonal and professional skills for better employability post-graduation. You'll learn how to establish production companies with tutors serving as mentors for guidance and oversight.

The module aims to develop your knowledge and skills in your chosen specialist area. You'll also learn how to research and implement advanced techniques to support production in your chosen specialist area. 

This module focuses on crafting and presenting a project proposal, building on course research and practice.

The proposal, presented as an individual project pitch/synopsis, will include essential details like workflows and crews for project completion. A negotiated learning agreement will be created, continuously monitored, and appraised throughout the module.

On this module, you'll need to choose a dissertation topic with guidance from academic staff in the Film and Media field. The topic can cover any area within this field, pending approval. Throughout the dissertation process, you should show a solid grasp of relevant theories, research methods, and a clear hypothesis for your research project.

The project will take the form of an extended period of practice within (a) particular area(s) of film, media or television production.
