Children, Young People and Families Practitioner apprenticeship is aimed at practitioners who wish to pursue a career in working with children, young people and families, across the education, social care and wellbeing sector, whichever area of practice you choose, you will want to know how to work safely and effectively with the children and families who use those services.

You may be looking for employment in the sector, or likewise you may be already be employed in the sector and looking for an opportunity to engage in professional development and attain a higher-level qualification.

As a Children, Young People and Families Practitioner apprentice you may work in settings as diverse as family homes, residential care homes, youth centres, early years, youth offending, children’s centres, educational settings or within the social care and therapeutic wellbeing community.

You will have a disposition to care and a respectful curiosity that challenges and supports children, young people and families to manage risk and stay safe, specifically focusing on supporting the children, young people and families to achieve positive and sustainable change in their lives.

You will have a desire and commitment to develop the effective skills in recognising and assessing the complex needs that children, young people and families often present.

You will be passionate about achieving a high standard of professional practice, which will positively impact on individuals’ lives, their families and the wider community.

What you'll do

  • Throughout the Children, Young People and Families Practitioner apprenticeship, you will work alongside other professionals and organisations to share the responsibility for improving outcomes for children, young people and their families.
  • Each contact with a child or family will be different, therefore you will learn to exercise judgement, drawing upon a range of evidence-based approaches that inform your practice.
  • You will be encouraged to regularly evaluate the effectiveness of your interventions and practice, with support from an experienced practitioner, in order to constantly improve and develop best practice.

Information for employers

A Children, Young People and Families Practitioner apprentice is employed to fulfil a job role within your workplace, while studying for a formal qualification. The apprenticeship is open to new and existing employees.

This course meets the Apprenticeship Standards for Children, Young people and Families Practitioner and your apprentice will develop the knowledge and skills to either succeed in their chosen Job role/ career or progress to the next apprenticeship level.

  • If your payroll is under £3m, you don’t need to pay the Apprenticeship Levy. However, you can get funding towards the cost of training and assessment of apprentices. You only pay 5% - the government will co-fund the other 95% (up to the funding band maximum).
