Psychology with Psychotherapy & Counselling

This module provides you with a foundation in study skills by guiding you through the skills required to produce high quality academic work. Topics covered in the module include academic writing, referencing and critical analysis.

In this module, you will study Cognition, Development, Social Behaviour, and Individual Differences. You will attend workshops on the methods of Psychology, Design and Analysis, Memory, and Testing.

The aim of this module is to introduce you to the history of psychology through a consideration of landmark studies in psychology and introduce you to research within psychology through a consideration of research studies in psychology and practical experience conducting research.

This interesting module will introduce you to critical thinking and discussion, and essential skills for success at university. A range of world issues and current affairs within broadly defined areas such as, political systems, environmentalism, law and justice, and culture and society, will be explored.

This module aims to introduce you to the principles of philosophy by studying a range of topics and themes such as: Capital Punishment, Abortion, Commercial Trade of Human Organs, Euthanasia, Allocation of Scarce Resources, The Environment, The Treatment of Animals and whether the illegality of recreational drugs can be justified.

This module aims to introduce you to themes relating to the body, health, and illness from sociological and religious perspectives. You will look at the range of approaches to 'good' and 'bad' health and why some social groups have better 'health' than others. You will also look at the relationship between healthcare and spirituality.

The aim of this module is for you to study the nature of counselling and its relationship to other helping strategies. You will learn to develop interpersonal skills and awareness of the counselling process and gain a deeper understanding to the counselling process.

In this module you will investigate the development of counselling and psychotherapy. You will learn behavioural approaches to counselling and psychotherapy. This module explores the theory and practice of counselling and psychotherapy and many types of controversies in the field.

Research underpins everything that you will learn on your degree. Developing an understanding of how to design, analyse and interpret research studies will provide you with the core skills needed throughout your course. You will learn to undertake research in a range of different areas and how to convey these findings to a range of different audiences.

Developmental psychology considers the psychology of life span providing you with an understanding of how we learn language, develop attachments and the impact of ageing upon our behaviours. You will learn about the way in which our behaviours and actions are shaped by the groups we identify with and how as individuals our attitudes develop, alongside other core areas of social psychology.

Cognition concentrates on mental processes such as memory, thinking and language. Your physiological systems underpin all of these behaviours. Psychobiology gives you an understanding of the interaction between your biology and behaviour. Together these two approaches allow you to understand a range of processes including memory, attention and perception.

You will be introduced to the historical and philosophical basis of the unconscious. You will learn the two key theories on the unconscious and dreams, and will explore personal influences on work. You'll be able to reflect on the continuing influences and concepts of the unconscious.

In this module you will explore the evidence base for Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT). You will be given the opportunity to understand the historical base and introduced to theoretical underpinnings of CBT.

In this module you will investigate the development of counselling and psychotherapy. You will learn behavioural approaches to counselling and psychotherapy. This module explores the theory and practice of counselling and psychotherapy and many types of controversies in the field.

This module aims to enhance your academic skills in the subject of psychology, including plagiarism awareness, note-taking, and presentation skills. You will also expand your awareness of contemporary psychological topics and the applications of psychology in a variety of settings.

This module will develop your intermediate counselling skills through participation in experimental learning situations and the extensive practice of counselling skills based on the Rogerian person-centred approach.

This module will introduce you to a variety of statistical and research techniques in both academic and commercial settings. You will have the opportunity to apply these techniques within a practical setting.

We aim with this module to develop the skills you need to carry out and write up your own independent research study using qualitative methods of data collection and analysis.

This module explores social psychology and developmental psychology. You will look into a range of topics to develop your understanding and knowledge of social psychology such as attribution, social cognition and aggression and developmental psychology such as language development, attachment and Theory of Mind.

This module will allow you to demonstrate an understanding of a number of fundamental issues in human cognition, ranging from visual perceptual processes to problem solving and reasoning. You will also be provided with an understanding of key areas within physiological psychology.

This module aims to explore psychological theories of intelligence, emotion, motivation, gender, the self and personality and the principles of psychometrics. The consistency of personality, and other individualities, across time and situations will be considered as will the impact of individual differences on other behaviours and on educational and social policy.

The module explores the concept of the unconscious from the British school of object relations theory. It aims to underpin your theoretical understanding of unconscious processes. You will learn through practical experience of direct infant observation.

You will be provided with the vital understanding of the Person-Centred Approach which is fundamental to developing skills to enhance your counselling practice. You will study a variety of theoretical learning materials providing you with a wealth of knowledge with the ability of application within a professional environment.

You will develop your understanding of key Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) skills and theory. You'll learn practical CBT skills, and interventions and develop an awareness to their appropriate application.

In this module you will develop an understanding of the dynamics that operates within groups and self. You will also develop skills via self-awareness and self-reflection.

The aim of this module is for you to investigate theoretical approaches to counselling. You will develop a critical understanding of current models on integrative approaches.

With this module you will complete an advanced piece of empirical investigation under supervision by an appropriate member of staff. This may be in any psychological area in which you are interested, provided the topic is approved by a member of the psychology staff.

You'll further develop ethical practice of counselling skills. The module teaches a person-centred approach to develop your ability to reflect and evaluate counselling. The module encourages personal development to develop your counselling skills.

The aim of this module is for you to investigate theoretical approaches to counselling. You will develop a critical understanding of current models on integrative approaches.

You'll learn about the development of forensic psychology. The module aims to increase understanding of the origins of offending behaviour and the assessment and treatment of offenders. You'll also study current issues specific to violent and sexual offenders.

The aim of this module is to develop your critical understanding of topics relating to the impact and consequences of crime from both social psychological and forensic perspectives. You will explore content on how impacts and consequences relate to both individual both victims and society in general.

The module examines individuals with brain damage or those suffering from brain dysfunction or trauma from a neuropsychological and cognitive perspective. The module covers the use of techniques, such as neuroimaging, in developing the understanding of neuropsychological disorders.

The module introduces the field of psychopharmacology with a particular emphasis on examining "abused" drugs. You'll also study chemical treatments used for psychiatric disorders. The module approaches these topics from historical, physiological, neurochemical, and psychological perspectives.

The module covers a number of topic areas chosen both for their importance in educational practice and to reflect the application of psychological research to the area of education. The module will pay particular attention to assessment issues in educational psychology and will look at the role of an Educational Psychologist.

This module will give you a detailed understanding of the major developmental disorders and how psychologists help those that are suffering from them. You will also learn the social and emotional aspects of psychopathology.

This module provides a short placement opportunity for you to apply your psychological knowledge in a workplace setting. This allows you to build confidence and experience ahead of post-study employment, to learn more about the application of your psychological skills to a new job or to experience new settings in which you might work.

You'll get the opportunity to pursue an area of interest in a field or applied area of psychology through independent study. You'll also develop your research skills through reading and interrogation of a variety of resources, gaining up to date knowledge and demonstrating critical appreciation of your chosen topic. 

You'll learn about the many different roles of a Clinical and Health Psychologist. You'll explore how they apply skills in different professional arenas. You'll be able to communicate a clear and coherent explanation of the roles of a clinical or health psychologist. You'll also gain professional competence in clinical communication skills.

In this module, you will develop your skills in applying cognitive behavioural theories within clinical and health psychology. You will also develop your problem-solving skills in applying techniques to treatment plans.
