Football Studies

This module aims to provide you with an insight into the different sport-related disciplines. It aims to broaden understanding of sport and physical activity from the perspectives of performance and health as well as considering structure and delivery from the group and individual participation.

This module aims to help you develop the necessary skills enabling study at the appropriate academic level. It will also encourage you to reflect on and learn from your experiences and support professional and personal development. 

Examine the football industry from a business perspective, providing you with a broad knowledge of financial and environmental impacts. You'll also consider employment opportunities, objectives and conduct of sports suppliers and consumers, across different sectors and in various markets.

This module aims to provide you with a broad knowledge of the structure and function of how football-related organisations deliver and utilize sport. Specifically, how they support wider social agendas. It also examines the importance of developing pathways and sustainable activities within these environments.

This module will allow you to use coaching and sports science principles and practices to improve performance in football. You will undertake a variety of theoretical and practical learning tasks aimed at developing your skills as a coach, particularly focussed on the multidisciplinary approach required to improve performance within football environments.

This module will introduce basic concepts and methodologies from Media Studies, applicable to the study of football. It will provide experience of the close reading and contextualisation of football-related media formats and examine the key factors shaping the media presentation and consumption of football.

In this module you will examine football cultural identities and communities and develop your awareness on how these are created and their likely future development. You will be challenged to develop knowledge through the application of social and cultural theories in order to provide a deeper understanding of the modern football world. This module also aims to develop your awareness of a range of football specific populations and their challenges.

This module focuses on the nature of quantitative and qualitative research methods and a variety of research data gathering tools. You will develop skills associated with gathering and managing data through relevant tools, reporting research findings and developing a critical awareness of research limitations. You will also assess key concepts linked to entrepreneurial capabilities, including effective communication of information

During this module, you'll consider the key theories and perspectives on hosting and managing football events, with a focus on those of international significance. It will develop your ability to blend theoretical and practical concepts and implement operations management techniques in a range of football event contexts.

Develop your contemporary marketing knowledge, skills and experiences in a range of football contexts, environments and media. This module will aid your ability to identify, problem solve and deploy a range of sports marketing theories and practices. You'll develop a pragmatic understanding of the practical application of football marketing strategies and tactics in the 21st century, involved in the marketing of football and marketing through football and how media is used.

The module will encourage you to develop an understanding of the drivers that underpin football development and critically analyse initiatives that are developed to support football in schools and the wider community. You'll gain knowledge and skills around implementing, controlling and improving football development initiatives and appreciate the wider impacts such programs have on communities.

Develop your coaching competencies and confidence. This module encourages experimentation within the coaching process through progressive analysis and reflection. The module aims to train you to be an adaptive football coach who can respond and alter your coaching according to changing purposes, mid-session demands and post-session/schedule analysis.

This module will allow you to build a framework for sports coaches to develop techniques in sports performance. You will focus on technical and tactical analysis. You will also review pertinent scientific elements of training and performance.

You will study sports tourism as a global and emerging field. The module focuses on significant issues influencing growth and impact on host communities, as well as within rural and urban contexts. You will critically examine the sociological and motivational characteristics of those who pursue it. The module shows the opportunities and limitations presented by sports phenomena.

You will study biological, psychological, and sociological factors that impact talent development in the sport. You will examine performance pathways developed by organisations, so players reach full potential. You will also explore the support mechanisms which develop performers.

This module allows you to follow safe and ethical assessment procedures, in the analysis of sporting performance. You'll be able to analyse sporting performance and the subsequent development of sporting talent through evaluative and constructive feedback.

You will have the opportunity to develop an understanding of the key factors associated with working within a sports coaching context. The emphasis of the module is placed upon you gaining experiential knowledge and developing your knowledge and skills (competencies) in a ‘real-world’ environment (e.g., local schools, clubs etc.). 

The aim of the dissertation is to provide an opportunity for you to pursue an in-depth study on a topic of your own choice which is related to your substantive areas of study. You'll work independently, under limited supervision, in order to develop and demonstrate your academic skills and abilities. 

The aim of this module is to facilitate the opportunity for you to provide match, notational analysis and technique analysis support within a high performance coaching environment. You'll apply your previous knowledge and understanding of performance analysis in a live context while supporting a high performance coach and team. 

Do you want to start your own business venture? This module will encourage you to think conceptually and critically about the role of the individual in developing enterprise and new venture creation through individual self-reflection and analysis of various entrepreneurs.

The aim of this module is to apply your knowledge of the factors that impact talent development to talent system design in a specific sporting context. It examines the talent systems developed within a sport of your choice and you will devise mechanisms and strategies for the relevant organisations to better develop participants to their full potential.

This module lets you encounter and address the challenges of a consultancy project involving research, critical thinking and problem solving. You'll focus on engagement with an organisation, group or individual and you'll use your skills to look at an identified client issue.

Become a better critical thinker, critically reflective practitioner and problem solver. Develop confidence in your perceptions and learn to question your values, beliefs, assumptions and interpretations of the football coaching environment from your position of competence. The module will encourage you to apply your multidisciplinary learning to applied football coaching practice and personal coaching philosophies, embrace collaborative learning and knowledge sharing.

The module aims to advance your knowledge of the football industry by examining a range of contemporary issues from differing perspectives. Exploration will be underpinned by relevant theories and concepts. The module seeks to develop a critical understanding of a range of social, political, operational, psychological and philosophical issues in the football industry and the implications of these for stakeholders in both domestic and international contexts.

This module will critically explore the theory and practice of corporate and business strategy in football organisations and the industries within which they operate both in the UK and internationally. You'll develop analytical skills enabling you to focus on areas of good practice and explain how firms are using a range of strategies to compete and deal with domestic and international strategic issues.

This module aims to examine notions of ‘popular culture’ and their application to football. You'll develop your skills in the analysis of popular cultural sources/artefacts with a football content and investigate the changing place and significance of football within wider patterns of popular culture.

This module provides an opportunity to develop a critical understanding of the key factors associated with working within an applied football coaching context. The emphasis of the module is placed upon gaining experiential knowledge and developing your competencies and capabilities in a ‘real-world’ environment (e.g., schools, clubs etc.). You'll be required to undertake a minimum of 120 hours of experiential learning with an appropriate experiential provider in sports coaching or related contexts.

Gain real experience as an employee in a professional industry capacity, developing a variety of academic and employability skills. Throughout this module, you'll consolidate, apply, and develop your knowledge and skills gained in an applied and practical manner.
