Dr Guy Atherton
Guy has been a lecturer/tutor on the orthodontic therapy course since its inception in 2009. He also works in specialist orthodontic practice in West Yorkshire. He has been a qualified dentist for over 40 years. He has also been registered as a specialist in orthodontics since 2000. He has published papers on the prevalence of medical emergencies in dental practice, and is the co-author of a textbook on their management. He also had his MSc thesis published in the Journal of Orthodontics.
Guy lectures on many aspects of the theory and practice of orthodontics. As the course progresses, he gives regular revision tutorials and assists students in the preparation of clinical case presentations.
Having qualified in 1982, Guy worked in general dental practice and the hospital dental service for a number of years. He took time out to travel in 1989 during which he worked at the Sydney Dental Hospital. This was followed by a year working as a dentist in the outback of Western Australia between three mining towns and two aboriginal communities. In 1996, he commenced specialist orthodontic training at the University of Manchester and has run his own specialist orthodontic practice since completing his training in 2000. He has been teaching here on the orthodontic therapy course since 2009.
