Dr Alison Overend

Phase 2 Tutor
School of Medicine
0

Alison Overend is trained as a GP and has worked as a partner in Maryport, Cumbria since 1993. She is a fellow of the Royal College of GP

My role is to lead the MBBS teaching and administrative team at Westlakes Campus (NCRRM), to help with development of teaching material, to liaise with the local Hospital Trusts and to ensure quality and equivalence between the Burnley and West Cumbria campuses.

My personal journey began at St Hilda's College Oxford, as a classicist, where (amongst a wide range of other subjects) I studied the Pre-Socratic Philosophers, who first postulated the existence of the atom. I became more intested in science and turned to medicine as a career in my mid 20's - training at Bristol. Dr Sandy Macara was one of my most influential teachers there, developing my interest in the importance of the Inverse Care Law and the postive influence a GP can have on a population's health. After starting as a GP partner in Cumbria in 1993, I was able to develop my interest in Evidence Based Medicine after undertaking an innovative course in Therapeutics, under the auspices of Professor Michael Rawlins. As a result of this, I was able to implement a collaborative practice formulary before these had become standard, and I gave a short presentation at the National Conference for Clinical Effectiveness in Ayrshire in April 1999, entitled "A Practice Formulary Without Tears" Additionally I have been a Registered Trainer for the Faculty of Reproductive and Sexual Health, and provided a service for those misusing drugs the GP practice for 20 years- in collaboration with the local provider Unity. I worked partime for the University of Newcastle as a Senior Medical Tutor, supporting GP practices who taught Newcastle Medical Students.
