Fire Engineering (Foundation Entry)

This module has been created to equip you with the information, skills and knowledge to help you succeed in your chosen route of academic study in engineering. 

You will get an introduction to two-dimensional and three-dimensional computer aided design tools. You will be introduced to system analysis and solutions using MATLAB whilst developing your personal transferable skills. You'll develop the ability to understand engineering design tools which will support the foundation year and subsequent year of study in your chosen route into engineering.

This module is designed to help you develop and reinforce basic mathematical skills needed for study in science, engineering, and computing subjects. Emphasis will be placed on building confidence and competence in a range of mathematical skills that are used in real-world problems.

The aim of this module is to introduce you to the fundamentals of combustion and fire. Your main goal will be to gain an understanding and knowledge of combustion, fire and explosion phenomena.

The module will provide you with the basics of the legal system operating in the UK. You will learn to understand the employment relationship. You will work on basic leadership, management and team working skills.

This module aims to introduce all necessary elements which are required to start a consistent further education in building and fire safety engineering. The module introduces you to the principles of energy transfer, thermodynamics, and fluid dynamics and sets the scene for further study.

The module introduces simple design to develop a scientific and analytical approach. You'll learn to solve environmental/safety control problems associated with the built environment.

This module introduces you to the functional requirements of materials for structures. You will investigate materials used in structs and examine key construction methods.

You will establish fundamental calculus and operational mathematical skills and provide a framework of mathematical techniques with which to analyse engineering problems. You will be required to practice solving applied mathematical problems.

You'll develop mathematical, analytical, IT, communication, and research skills. You will need this knowledge as you progress through the course.

You'll learn about fluid flow and how to apply these principles to flames, fires, and explosions. The module builds on the theory and practical themes introduced in level one. You'll further improve your qualitative understanding of combustion, fire, and explosion phenomena.

The module aims to develop your understanding of the impact of fires on the built environment, including building construction methods and materials used, smoke movement and control, law regulations and standards. It explores different types of fire behaviour with case studies of the impact of fires on buildings nationally and internationally.

This module will develop your awareness of accident and catastrophe phenomena and their impact on society. It will explore different types of technological accidents and catastrophes in the build world, as well as case studies illustrating the impact of fires on buildings. You'll build on your employability skills, including independent working, analysis, problem solving, presentations and group work.

In this module you will learn the key areas of health and safety in the workplace. You will be able to identify and control hazards.

The aim of this module is to focus on the role and responsibilities of the project manager, including leadership and organisation skills. You'll also develop your analytical, monitoring and controlling techniques.

This module will introduce you to using fire hazard analysis. You will gain the necessary skills in using specialist software to solve computational problems of fire engineering.

In this module you will build upon your previously learnt skills and provides you with the mathematical skills required for the final stage of your study. The module will teach you how to use infinite series, integral calculus, differential equations and matrix algebra in order to solve common engineering problems.

On this module you'll gain an understanding of enclosure fire and the dominant mechanisms in controlling them. It will explore the range of relationships, solutions and models used in the design of buildings for fire safety and investigations. You'll also build on your employability skills, including independent working, analysis, problem solving, presentations and working with others.

This module aims to develop your skills in numerical analyses. You will evaluate different appropriate fire protection applications.

This module will develop your ability to investigate a fire to meet the needs of officials. You will learn to recognize the scene, patterns, indicators, and dynamics of fire development. You will gain an insight into the fire setter's motives and characteristics. The module emphasises on the recovery and analysis of evidence and the conclusions that can be drawn from the analytical results. You will understand the investigation structure and management of mass fatality incidents as well as small premises.

You'll develop theoretical and practical themes of systems analysis and probability theory. The module aims to introduce probabilistic risk assessment and modelling in technical systems. You'll also gain independent working, analysis, modelling and problem-solving skills.

This module will develop your engineering design skills both as a team member and as an individual. You will develop your critical thinking, problem solving and key skills in case studies.

You'll carry out an independent study of theoretical, computational, experimental or investigative analysis, or a combination. By the end of this module, you will have enhanced your research, communication and evaluation skills.
