Building Services & Sustainable Engineering

This module introduces you to the principles of the construction methods used in, low rise construction in the UK. You'll look into the properties of materials used in construction.

This module will provide you with an introduction to the English Legal systems and the principles of legal reasoning applicable to precedent and statutory interpretation. It will help you gain an understanding of the settlement of disputes through the court structure, and the legal principles considered will be applied, particularly to the construction industry.

This module introduces key concepts and principles of building science and the internal environment. You'll explore thermal comfort, light, sound, and electricity, along with their governing mathematical and scientific concepts. These concepts are applied to environmental design, fostering a scientific and analytical approach to solving environmental control problems within the built environment.

This is a single module designed to provide an understanding of the concepts and basic principles of engineering mathematics to solve engineering problems.

This module teaches fundamental thermo-fluids concepts for analysing heat and fluid mass transfer processes. You'll use these tools to appraise construction system designs and solve common problems in the construction industry. You'll be required to produce mathematical analyses of engineering systems and propose model solutions to simple engineering problems.

This module introduces building engineering services design to those with little or no construction or engineering background. You will also look at building services in a wider context. It supports your chosen career and integrates with your first-year studies. It also develops your personal transferable skills, laying a foundation for further studies in the discipline.

The aim of this module is to equip you with the skillsets required for developing advanced building simulation modelling skills. This will will set you apart from traditional building services engineering graduates. The module provides instruction on how to effectively use one of the world’s leading software tools currently available: Integrated Environmental Solutions Virtual Environment (IESVE).

The aim of this module is to build upon fundamental thermo-fluids concepts introduced at Level 1 and provide accepted means of modelling the thermal and air quality of building constructions; thence to analyse the design and performance of commonly encountered constructions and propose engineered solutions to commonly encountered problems in the construction industry. 

You'll study Information Technology and the impact of CAD on the building process. The module develops understanding by introducing Autodesk AutoCAD 2006. You'll also use building energy performance software in relation to working as a Building Services Engineer.

This module is designed to provide you with the opportunity to develop and enhance your Building Services skills in a team situation with emphasise on electrical services. The project will enable you to initiate and develop your critical thinking, problem solving and key skills in application to a case study example using appropriate tools of analysis and communication. The module acts as the vehicle for integrating the study themes of design, ICT and technology across the level 5.

The learning aims of this module are to develop your independent critical and analytical abilities through the medium of services systems design. Extend problem solving abilities with regard to building services systems, network analysis and to develop a case study approach to the evaluation of building services design.

The module will develop your understanding and application of knowledge of building services plant to allow you to critically evaluate and predict plant and systems performance by the use of analytical and numerical techniques. You'll also learn about various methods of maintenance and management of building services within the context of regulatory framework and be able to appreciate the use of computer-based systems of maintenance including open systems.

The engineering design project is intended to provide you with the opportunity to extend your existing knowledge and demonstrate engineering project skills both as team members and as an individual. This module will enable you to develop your critical thinking, problem solving and key skills in application to a case study example using appropriate tools of analysis and communication. 

The nature of the dissertation is to present you with a challenge, the solution of which is not readily available, and it will therefore involve you in original work. On an individual basis the you'll be required to carry out an in depth investigation involving theoretical, experimental or investigative analysis or a combination of these.

This module will focus on the role and responsibilities of becoming a project manager. You will learn leadership and organisation skills essential to the role and understand the range of operational activities including analytical monitoring and controlling techniques.

This module has the following learning aims: To provide the underlying concepts of intelligent buildings, the working principles of hands-on experience on building automation systems, office automation systems, and communication systems. To provide knowledge of the construction and installation of the structured cabling systems enabling integrated system connections.

This module addresses issues facing energy conversion, distribution and management. You'll look at the need to optimise traditional power generation for higher thermal efficiency and better power utilisation. You'll also look at reduced system losses amid depleting energy resources and deteriorating environmental quality. As well as this, you'll focus on integrating renewable and environmentally friendly technologies into the power grid.

This module aim to introduce you to various emerging renewable energy technologies which are likely to mitigate the damaging effect of current energy technologies on the climate.
