University team win North West event

Students and staff from the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) have won an inaugural dragon boat racing event between four North West Universities.

The 15-strong UCLan team beat of competition from Edge Hill, Lancaster and Liverpool universities in the first annual North West Confucius Institute Dragon Boat Race at Liverpool Water Sports Centre.

Organised by the University of Liverpool, the competition invited Confucius Institutes from five North West universities, which have been promoting Chinese language and culture in the UK, to take part in a series of 250 metre heats and a final.

The Director of UCLan’s Confucius Institute, Feixia Yu, commented: “The UCLan team of staff and students did very well to be named as the overall winners of the competition.

“We had a lot of fun and the event drew quite a crowd – it was a great way of sharing Chinese traditions and allowing university Confucius Institutes to get involved in local communities.”

The North West universities are already planning next year’s event with a possibility that it may be held in Preston.
