UCLan Professor of Contemporary Art to showcase work at Harris Museum and Art Gallery
The 2017 Turner Prize winner and University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) professor Lubaina Himid MBE is hosting a homecoming exhibition at Preston’s Harris Museum and Art Gallery.
The Preston-based artist and UCLan Professor of Contemporary Art will be showcasing iconic works such as The Fashionable Marriage (1986) and Inside the Invisible (2002), seen in the UK for the first time in her first exhibition since winning the coveted award last December.
The artist, who is the first black woman to win the Turner Prize, has chosen the title of Hard Times, referencing Charles Dickens’ novel, which is thought to be inspired by his visit to Preston during the workers’ lock-out of 1853. Lubaina’s work celebrates black creativity and includes paintings and installations.
"It’s wonderful to be able to exhibit in The Harris again, it’s one of the most beautiful galleries for showing contemporary art in Britain."
She commented: “It’s wonderful to be able to exhibit in The Harris again, it’s one of the most beautiful galleries for showing contemporary art in Britain.”
Maria Murray, Head of the School of Art, Design and Fashion at UCLan where Lubaina is also a PhD supervisor, said: “I’m delighted that Professor Lubaina Himid’s provocative and exciting work is going on display in Preston for all to see.
“The University and the city were very proud of her Turner Prize success, so for art lovers to be able to see the work of someone with such international acclaim in Preston is fantastic.”
The opening night will be held on Thursday March 1 from 6.00pm until 7.30pm and will run until 3 June.
