Module 1: Contemporary Teaching Methodology

For practicing teachers who would like to be introduced to different perspectives on methodology

Communicative teaching
Lesson planning
Classroom management
Designing materials for language teaching
Classroom activities for active learning
Teaching intercultural communication skills

Module 2: Current Issues in TESOL

Introduces participants to current areas of debate in TESOL and how these can be critically evaluated and applied to their own teaching

Translation in English Language Teaching (ELT)
‘New’ methods and approaches – Dogme, demand-high teaching and data-driven learning
Authentic materials and textbooks
Teacher talk
Teaching grammar
Localising teaching

Module 3: Teaching English for Academic Purposes (TEAP)

Designed for English teachers who prepare students to study or support students studying English medium courses in universities or other institutions

Needs analysis in EAP contexts
EAP goals and learning outcomes
Syllabus design for EAP – skills and microskills
TEAP methodology, materials and activities
Designing EAP materials using authentic sources
Assessing EAP

Module 4: Testing and Assessment Opportunity

Opportunity to explore the principles of testing and assessment in different teaching situations

Teaching vs. testing
Major test formats
Task types e.g. multiple choice, open and closed cloze etc.
Alternative assessment formats e.g. portfolio etc.
Marking criteria & standardisation
Evaluating tests including reliability, validity, item analysis etc.

Module 5: Learning Technologies

Learn about different technologies and how to make the best use of them in their specific teaching contexts

Learner management systems for language learning
Classroom technology
Engaging students through ICT
Web-based language learning

All participants must be 18 years or above before first day of course
