Maria, from Cyprus, shares her favourite things about UCLan

Dealing with patients in clinical settings from the very first year was what attracted Maria, from Cyprus, to study Medicine (MBBS) at the University of Central Lancashire. Read about her experience below.

Previously I was in an international school in Cyprus – The Falcon School in Nicosia. For me, there is not a big difference in education styles here in the UK compared to Cyprus because I studied at an international school where I did iGCSE and A-Levels.

The thing that intrigued me was that UCLan provides clinical placements from the first year of the MBBS course, which is rare. This was the main reason I chose to study here. Even though I researched many universities, UCLan was the place that stood out.

The most enjoyable aspect of the course has been the fact I use the theory I learn in practical settings. All the Tutors and Professors are kind and approachable. Every one of them is always there to help with my studies and general issues. At first, it was very difficult as I didn’t know anyone, however, I was really shocked and pleased at how everyone was so welcoming and easy-going – it is a very friendly environment here.

"UCLan is a very helpful and diverse university and the city of Preston is full of friendly and respectful people."

Of the university services on offer, I often use the library and student centre which is really pleasing and quiet for both relaxing and studying. I regularly use the gym, which is free for all students! I go three-times per week to relax and exercise my body to help release any stress.

My favourite UCLan experience so far has been the clinical skills sessions with actual patients. My advice to you, if you are considering studying at UCLan, is don’t stress. The people here are very opening and are very keen to help. Preston is a safe and inexpensive city and I have never felt scared, even at night. I live in an apartment with my brother which I am really pleased with, it is both safe and clean.

The thing I like is that Preston is small, so everything is within walking distance. It has a lot of green spaces and is very clean. It has everything that you need with shops, restaurants and transportation all nearby. So far, I have visited some other cities in the UK, such as Manchester, Reading and Lancaster, which is easy to do from Preston on public transport.

In my spare time I usually like to go to the shops, cafes or travel to other nearby cities. I like that it is very easy to make friends here as we are all students trying to make friends and if possible, create good relationships with classmates.
