Studying in the UK vs the USA

InternationalAdvice

Key differences to consider before you move to the UK.

When it comes to higher education, you may find yourself comparing study options in other countries before you decide on where to study. The UK and the USA are both home to some of the world's leading universities and offer rich academic experiences.

There are distinct differences between the UK and USA that may influence your decision. We have compiled a list of key differences to consider before choosing where to study.

Cost of living UK vs USA

Generally, the cost of tuition and living expenses in the UK tends to be lower than the USA.

You can visit our cost of living support hub to find a list of average student living costs at our campuses. You can convert these costs to dollars to compare against USA living costs – just remember that 20% VAT is included as standard in the price most everyday UK costs and products, whereas USA sales tax varies by state.

Here at the University of Central Lancashire, we were ranked the most affordable university by The Times (2023). We provide a range of scholarships, bursaries and other financial aids that can help you with living costs.

Tuition costs UK vs USA

In the US and the UK you have to pay tuition fees to study at a university. You will typically pay a fee per year of study.

Due to undergraduate courses (bachelor’s degrees) taking four years in the US, and three in the UK, the UK can be the cheaper option in terms of tuition. This can vary depending the course you study, so it’s always best to check individual fees and course lengths on your desired course page.

Course structure differences between the UK and USA

Course length and structure is different between UK and USA universities. In the UK, undergraduate degrees typically last three years, whereas in the USA, they often take four years to complete. These lengths will vary depending on which programme you study – for example medical degrees can have more years of study.

For those pursuing postgraduate studies, UK master’s programmes usually take one year, compared to the two-year programmes commonly found in the USA.

This difference means that studying in the UK can save you both time and money, as you often pay for studies per academic year.

"The professors connect with you in a real and meaningful way, they care so deeply for the mental and educational wellbeing of all their students. The teaching methods were very hands-on compared to schools in the States."

Avé McDonald, BSc (Hons) Sports Therapy student from Montana.

Teaching and learning differences between UK and USA

The teaching styles in the UK and the USA differ, mostly in terms of academic independence.

In the UK, you’re encouraged to take responsibility for your learning. Lectures and seminars offer guidance, but you are expected to engage in independent study and research to develop a deeper understanding of your subject. Assessments in the UK are often essay-based, focusing on critical thinking and the ability to argue a point effectively.

In the USA, you experience more continuous assessment throughout the year, with regular homework, quizzes, and smaller assignments contributing to the final grade. While this can help keep students on track, the UK’s approach develops independence and time management skills, valuable qualities in both university and professional life.

At the University of Central Lancashire, we help support our students through this journey of independent learning. You’ll have access to modern facilities, expert lecturers, and extensive resources, giving you plenty of resources to focus on your independent work. We also offer extensive academic support to help you with your studies.
