John Trower
John works specifically as the Coach Mentor for the MSc Elite Coaching Practice course.
John has previously coached Track and Field Athletics at the highest level with athletes under his charge winning Olympic, World, European and Commonwealth medals in the Javelin event. At the Beijing Olympics in 2008, he was the Performance Manager for the sprints, hurdles and relay events, working and supporting the individual athletes and their coaches in the pursuit of medals at the highest level of their sport. He brings a multitude of knowledge, experience and guidance to the Coaches who enrol on the MSc Elite Coaching Practice Course.
John competed internationally in the javelin event and began coaching elite performers in the event. He was initially the National Coach for Junior athletes in 1987. He was a qualified Level 4 Coach in the javelin event. He went on to coach Steve Backley and Mick Hill to multiple medals across the spectrum of elite performance environments, including Olympic Games 1992 - 2004; World Championships 1991 - 2003; European Championships 1990 - 2002; and Commonwealth Games from 1990 - 2002. He has now attended every Olympic Games since Barcelona in 1992 up to the delayed Tokyo Games in 2021 and hopes to be engaged as a commentator at the Paris Olympics in 2024.
