Dr Daniel Fitton
Reader in User Experience Design
School of Engineering and Computing
Daniel is a Reader in User Experience Design. His research focuses on the exploration of User Experience (UX), Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) issues in the context of designing and creating novel and emerging interactive technologies. His specific expertise is UX research and co-designs methods for working with young people.
Daniel represents Computer Science on the executive team of the School. He is also a Research Degrees Tutor within the Computer Science area and Theme Lead within the Lancashire Research Centre for Digital Life.
Daniel has published widely within the research field of HCI and has led a number of interdisciplinary collaborations with both academics and practitioners. He currently has well over 100 peer reviewed publications and a range of experience acting as organiser, chair and associate-chair of conferences in the HCI area. He is also an experienced PhD supervisor and examiner.
- First class honours BSc in Computer Science and gained his PhD from the Computing Department of Lancaster University in 2007
- Fellow of the HEA
- User Experience Research (UXR)
- User Experience Design (UXD)
- Human-Computer Interaction (HCI)
- Interaction Design
- Child-Computer Interaction
- Teen-Computer Interaction
- Associate Editor
- International Journal of Child-Computer Interaction
Daniel's research is situated within the field of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI: an interdisciplinary field studying the interactions between humans and technology), and focusses primarily on User-Experience Design (UXD) which is both a practice and research area which applies understandings from the field of HCI in the creation of technology products and their associated user experiences.
He works within the fields of Child-Computer Interaction (CCI) and Teen-Computer Interaction (TeenCI) and is particularly interested in understanding and engaging teenagers as users and co-designers of technology. TeenCI is a research area that he has helped to define through running a series of workshops at key HCI conferences and editing and contributing to the first book. His main focus is on HCI issues in the context of teenagers currently under production with Springer (Perspectives on HCI Research with Teenagers).
His goal is to solve impactful ‘real-world’ problems through design and technology exploration. Daniel's recent publications were the first within his field to explore Dark Design within the context of mobile apps and teen users, raising awareness of manipulative design practices, cybersecurity threats and the potential impacts on younger users within the academic and practitioner communities.
