Dr Christina Feltham
Christina is an experienced clinical health professional who previously worked for the NHS for 27 years and in higher education as a Senior Lecturer in Midwifery since 2013. While working full-time in the NHS she undertook her first degree BA (Hons) Health Studies and went on to undertake a MSc in Midwifery and Women's Health. More recently she completed a PhD entitled; Multiple dimensions of self: A longitudinal grounded theory study exploring women’s experiences of maternity care when they present in pregnancy with a BMI of 35 or above. In recognition of her contributions to teaching, Christina is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and has a PgC in Academic Practice. She has a particular interest in maternal public health.
Christina has published research on student midwife and paramedic student interprofessional learning as well as experiences of newly qualified midwives and their learning needs at the point of registration. Her PhD work has seen her publish opinion articles and contribute to Best Practice Guidance as a task and finish group member for ICS, North East and North Cumbria. She is a peer reviewer for several journals including Journal of Midwifery, Journal of Maternal and Infant Nutrition and Nurse Education Today. She is a supervisor for both BSc (Hons) and MSc dissertation students. She is a Year Lead and teaches across all midwifery year groups, including both undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Christina's clinical career has seen her work as a hospital-based midwife and a community midwife. She has worked across all settings and has been part of a community team working within a standalone birth centre. Prior to moving to work in higher education, part of her role was working in risk, gaining experience in audit and clinical governance.
She is particularly proud of her work as Lead Midwife for Maternity Matters within the Trust where she previously worked. This involved moving forward Government initiatives, and implementing effective change through change management and education to provide an equitable maternity service across the region. This role focused on developing services and improving outcomes for disadvantaged women and their families.
