Research summary
Project title: Development of a new intelligent algorithm to improve autonomous car operation
The research aims to improve the solution performance and accuracy of the path planning problem in the automated driving system (ADS). The ADS consists of six stages as follows: sensors, perception, localization, assessment, path planning, and control. Unlike all other stages, path planning is one of the most challenging problems in the ADS because of the problem’s complexity, and the recent state-of-the-art techniques have multiple drawbacks.
The first phase of the design of the system and the algorithm has been made and initial results showed promising solutions compared to the existing algorithms. In the next half of the Ph.D., we will continue improving the algorithm, and test its performance on more complex scenarios. Then, the algorithm will be validated on a driverless pod.

We are keen to promote partnership; collaboration and employment opportunities for our students from day one.
Collaboration can take many forms – from co-developing the research a postgraduate student is undertaking for their PhD, to engaging a PhD student on a specific project that does not link directly to their PhD but uses their skills to address an issue.
