National Forum for Health and Wellbeing partners with UCLan’s School of Medicine & Dentistry to host a free public event
A free public event focused on understanding and living with prostate cancer and covering issues surrounding men’s health will take place at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan).
Organised by the National Forum for Health and Wellbeing (NFHW), in partnership with UCLan’ School of Medicine and Dentistry, the event will bring together experts to discuss medical issues affecting men and offer advice to help people cope with one of the biggest burdens on global healthcare.
The talk, part of the series of free public engagement seminars at UCLan, will take place on Wednesday 13 March from 6.30pm until 8.30pm in UCLan’s Harrington Building Lecture Theatre, on the Preston Campus.
The free seminar is open to all, and booking is not essential.

As we have heard recently, King Charles III has recently received treatment for an enlarged prostate and has kept the public informed about his condition.
Romesh Gupta OBE, Honorary Professor within UCLan School of Medicine and Dentistry and NFHW Steering Group Chair, said: “It’s important to be checked early and diagnosed as soon as possible to achieve better therapeutic outcomes.
“This event is not just for men, but for anyone interested in learning more about looking after men’s health. We’re sure it will be a very informative event for everyone.”
It will cover:
- Prostate cancer and actions to help prevent it
- Tony Collier’s personal story about being diagnosed with prostate cancer
- Explaining Spectroscopy a new non-invasive procedure
- Areas around men’s health

The speakers at the event are:
- Tony Collier BEM – Vice-Chair and Trustee of Tackle Prostate Cancer
- Dr Ashok Kumar Bhuvanagiri MBE, consultant urologist from Ysbyty Gwynedd Hospital, Bangor
- Ihtesham ur Rehman, Head of Translational Research and Professor of Biomaterials and Regenerative Medicine at UCLan
Professor Rehman will explain how his team are developing a new non-evasive test with patients undergoing investigations for prostate cancer. He said: “Spectroscopy is a powerful technique capable of analysing blood, urine and saliva for new markers for prostate cancer, providing information on the proteins, fats and carbohydrates.”
There will be a question-and-answer session after the talks.
