Local graphic design student inspired by Galloways Bakers for final year UCLan project

A local student has given one of Wigan’s well-known bakeries food for thought after coming up with a fresh new look for Galloways Bakers as part of his university studies.

University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) graphic design student Nathan Jones took inspiration from what he describes as “Wigan’s finest bakery” for his final year project and has come up with a redesign of the much-loved brand to celebrate more than 50 years of the business.

The 21-year-old completed the work, which includes a new logo, promotional posters and packaging, for purely academic purposes but has since shared his eye-catching re-brand with Galloways who has provided some very positive feedback.

Galloways has been part of the fabric of Wigan since it was established in 1971 by Ronald and Patricia Galloway and now boasts 24 shops throughout the town and beyond.

"I was keen to focus on a local business for this project and really felt like I could come up with a new look for Galloways that communicates its brand values, history and quality of the products."

Nathan, who hails from Platt Bridge and attended Birchall High School and St John Rigby College, said: “I was keen to focus on a local business for this project and really felt like I could come up with a new look for Galloways that communicates its brand values, history and quality of the products.

“The colour of the text is inspired by the golden crust of a meat and potato pie and I’ve made sure to include a pie image in every design so customers would know immediately what the product is.”

"I was very impressed with Nathan’s designs and think they’re very professional."

Eric Skrivens, bakery manager at Galloways

Eric Skrivens, bakery manager at Galloways, said: “I was very impressed with Nathan’s designs and think they’re very professional. If we ever decide to rebrand the business then we would be interested in learning more about Nathan’s ideas.”

The promising designer will graduate from UCLan in July and is already applying for jobs in the design industry.
