Working while studying

Balancing work and study can be a valuable way to gain experience and support your finances. It’s important to understand the work regulations for your student visa. Typically, international students on a Tier 4 visa can work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during holidays.

Many students find part-time jobs on campus, such as working as student ambassadors, or in cafeterias or administrative offices. Off-campus opportunities may include retail, hospitality or internships related to your field of study. Make sure your employer is aware of your visa restrictions and always prioritise your studies.

Volunteering is another fantastic way to gain work experience. You can learn more about volunteering through the Students' Union.

There is lots of different help you can get from careers team at UCLan. They organise job fairs throughout the year and offer assistance with CVs and mock interviews. Find out more about the careers and employment support available.

British culture

Studying in the UK may be a cultural adjustment.
Studying in the UK may be a cultural adjustment.

Embracing British culture is a big part of studying in the UK. Here's some tips to help you navigate it:

  • Basic phrases - learn simple expressions like “please,” “thank you” and “sorry.” They’re essential in daily interactions and will be appreciated by local people.
  • Politeness - British people value politeness. Use courteous expressions and maintain good manners to fit in.
  • Queueing - always queue (stand in line) when waiting for services such as in supermarkets or on public transport. It’s a key aspect of British etiquette.
  • Humour - British humour often involves sarcasm and irony. It might take some getting used to, but it’s a big part of the culture.

Please note that while GP consultations are free, prescriptions typically are not. Additionally, dental and eye consultations will incur costs.

Emergency services

Dial 999 for immediate assistance in emergencies, including medical emergencies, fires, or police help. For non-emergency medical advice, dial 111. Knowing the location of the nearest hospital can be very useful.

Weather

The UK’s weather can be quite varied. Here’s what to expect:

  • Four seasons in a day - it’s common to experience different weather conditions throughout the same day. Be prepared for rain, even on sunny days, by carrying an umbrella or raincoat.
  • Cold winters, cool summers - winters are usually cold and damp, and some winters can even snow so make sure you have a warm, waterproof coat. Summers are generally pleasantly cool with some warm days, so dressing in layers is a practical approach.
  • Sunlight - during winter the daylight hours are shorter, while summer days can be long and bright. Make the most of the sunshine when it appears.

Safety and security

Your safety is a top priority. The University ensures a secure environment for you to live and study.

Preston holds Purple Flag status, awarded for its low crime rates, vibrant nightlife and excellent range of visitor attractions. This provides a secure environment for students.

The University has a dedicated security team available around the clock, with regular patrols across campus and student accommodations. Preston, Burnley and Westlakes are known for being safe, welcoming and supportive communities, ensuring a positive experience for all students.

There's additional security through the SafeZone app. This free app is designed to help you quickly and easily flag urgent issues. SafeZone can provide immediate access to assistance in case of an emergency. With just the touch of a button, you can alert UCLan security, who will respond to your location on campus. The app also allows the security team to send out critical or emergency messages across the campus. Watch our video about the SafeZone app.
