Ted Howell

Lecturer, Year 1 Lead
School of Arts and Media

Ted leads the first year of Graphic Design at UCLan and is responsible for the developing and delivering the undergraduate degree in the subject. He is a graduate of Northumbria University and is an established designer with a career starting in 2003. During this time he ran his own independent design studio in Manchester, working with clients from both private and public sectors. Prior to this he worked for brand consultancies 999 and True North. His creative work across branding and graphic design has been recognised through award schemes which include Transform, Design Week, Fresh and Roses. Ted has also guided students to success, these accolades include D&AD New Blood and The Creative Conscience Awards.

As year 1 lead and module tutor, Ted's main teaching and delivery activities are with the first year cohort where he is also responsible for developing curriculum for year 1 modules, and writing and delivering briefs. He also teaches the final year students within the context of Honours and competition briefs. Ted is also Academic Advisor to year 1 (level 4) students, this involves ensuring the students' wellbeing and making their journey through the course programme as rewarding as possible.

Ted was instrumental in the publication of Words Of Wisdom, a university publication originally conceived and developed by fellow staff members Andrew Bainbridge and Jon Harker. Words Of Wisdom is a celebration of the success of ex-students and chronicles the experiences of 50 alumni from the Graphic Design course in Preston. You can read the book.
Alongside Andrew Bainbridge, Ted also runs and maintains the highly successful website with a core purpose for disseminating design to the student body. The website is called The Disciples Of Design, and is a hub for a global collective of design academics, practitioners, artists and students.
