Dr Roshini Mariam Mathews
Roshini completed her BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science degree in 2012. She then obtained her MSc in Cancer Biology and Therapy. Following the completion of her PhD, Roshini was employed as a Teaching Fellow and undertook various teaching activities. Roshini has also worked as a postdoctoral research associate where she studied a 3D blood-brain barrier model for Alzheimer’s disease. Following this, Roshini worked as an Associate Lecturer and is currently employed as a Lecturer in Biosciences in our School of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences. She is involved in the teaching and delivery of various bioscience and pharmacy modules.
Roshini undertakes teaching and development of learning resources on both undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses. Roshini teaches a range of topics including immunology, research methods, pharmaceutics, cancer biology and cellular & molecular biology. Roshini also supervises final year undergraduates, MSc Cancer Biology and MRes research projects. She is also a module lead for the Fundamentals of Biosciences module. This is a core module undertaken by Bioscience students in the first year of the undergraduate degree course. Roshini is a personal tutor for first year Bioscience students and also acts as an academic advisor for MPharm students.
Roshini commenced her PhD in cellular and molecular biology where she investigated the role of curcumin as a therapeutic agent for rheumatoid arthritis and cancer. Following the successful completion of her PhD, Roshini was employed by our School of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences as a Teaching Fellow in 2018 and undertook various teaching activities and responsibilities. Roshini returned to research as a postdoctoral research associate where she was working on a 3D blood-brain barrier model for Alzheimer’s disease. Roshini subsequently worked as an Associate Lecturer within the School and has been employed as a Lecturer in Biosciences since October 2022.
- PhD in Cell and Molecular Biology, University of Central Lancashire, 2017
- MSc Cancer Biology and Therapy, University of Central Lancashire, 2013
- BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science, University of Central Lancashire, 2012
Roshini is a member of the Research Centre for Translational Biosciences & Behaviour, UCLan. Her current research interest includes investigating the development of an in vitro 3D blood-brain barrier model for glioblastoma and Alzheimer’s disease. Additionally, she is also interested in researching the use of natural plant-based compounds for cancer treatment. Roshini is interested in studying more selective targeting of glioma with the aid of aptamers and investigating the development of plant extract-loaded lipid nanoparticles. She frequently collaborates with Dr Tamara Zwain for potential glioblastoma treatment.
