Dr Poyan Barabari
Poyan has the role of leadership and management of the BDS programme. His main task is to ensure the achievement of excellent standards and create an environment for excellent student and staff experience. He also assists the Head of School in the achievement of strategic objectives in the School, Faculty, the wider University and the external environment.
Poyan oversees the collaboration of staff involved in teaching, supervision and assessment of dental students across all Dental Education Centres to ensure the same standards are implemented across all placement locations. He has a pivotal role to ensure the quality of teaching and learning, and assessment within the BDS programme. He also assists to promote the research and knowledge transfer agendas within the School utilising an evidence-based approach. He also delivers undergraduates and postgraduate lectures around the topics of Restorative Dentistry as well as hands-on clinical session to teach fundamental clinical skills for fixed and removable Prosthodontics.
Poyan has completed his Doctorate in Clinical Dentistry (Prosthodontics) in 2016 in the University of Sheffield. Afterwards he spent nearly three years in the Sheffield's Dental School where he was engaging with the education of the BDS students in both Phantom Head and Clinical environments. In 2018, he submitted an evidence-based portfolio of his teaching activities to Higher Education Academy and was awarded the status of Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) in recognition of his attainment against the UK Professional
Standards Framework for teaching and learning support in higher education. Later, he joined the UCL, Eastman Dental Institute where he was involved in the delivery of the Restorative MSc programme and delivered both online and hands-on CPD courses to equip attending delegates with the knowledge of the most recent evidence, techniques and materials in the field of fixed prosthodontics.
As for clinical expertise, Poyan has vast experience in the management of severely worn dentition, full mouth rehabilitation with direct and indirect restorations, provision of complete and partial removable prostheses, aesthetic dentistry and management of congenitally missing teeth.
During his years of practice, Poyan has developed a particular interest in minimally invasive dentistry and dentine bonding agents which allow achieving a predictable bonded tooth-restoration complex with maximum tissue preservation. He also runs a joint Restorative-Implant clinic with his oral surgeon colleagues where they discuss the cases and carry out treatment planning and provision of implant-retained and implant-supported prosthesis followed by a strict maintenance programme.
