Dr Helen Miles
Helen Miles is the Lead for Medicine in Clinical Practice in our MBBS programme. She is also the campus day lead for our Burnley Campus. Her main interests lie in clinical reasoning, technology-enhanced learning, and person-centred care. She is also active clinically as a General Practitioner.
As Theme Lead for Medicine in Clinical Practice, Helen has oversight of the case-based learning and specialist clinical teaching. This is within years 3 and 4 of our MBBS programme. She also leads the clinical reasoning curriculum. Helen is interested in clinical reasoning, technology-enhanced learning, and person-centred care.
Helen has previously taught communications skills, held a role as a community clinical tutor, facilitated small groups and been a regular OSCE examiner.
Helen Joined us in 2017. She led the development of the new Evidence Informed Practice of Medicine Theme in Phase 2 of the MBBS programme. She established an innovative module, “Health and Society”, a collaboration with third-sector organisations providing placements for third-year medical students.
In 2019, Helen was appointed as Theme Lead for Medicine in Clinical Practice. She took responsibility for specialist clinical teaching within years three and four of the MBBS. Working closely with our clinical module leads, she leads our case-based learning and expert half-day programmes. She has also collaboratively developed the clinical reasoning programme in years 3 and 4. She continues to lead in this area. Helen has helped establish, in partnership with the Interprofessional Education (IPE) team and eight other courses, a recurrent Frailty IPE event involving simulated multidisciplinary team working.
Since 2017, Helen has led a team of campus day facilitators and clinical teachers to deliver core teaching at our Burnley campus. She continues to be responsible for the ongoing training and development of this team.
