Students raise £1,500 through charity fashion show
Fashion students from the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) have raised £1,500 for charity while sharing the latest style secrets at a charity catwalk show.
UCLan third year fashion promotion students organised and ran the event at Venue 53. It featured a 40-model catwalk show displaying a mixture of student and graduate designs alongside clothing from Boohoo, with all models dressed by the students themselves.
In just nine weeks, the students sourced models, created and styled garments, choreographed the catwalk, organised the music, sourced and designed the interior space and stage, organised a pop up shop and arranged for professional singer Amy Jo Clough to open the evening with live music.
The event raised £1,100 for Preston Guild Rotary Club from ticket sales and £400 from a pop-up jewellery stall went to Newlife, the charity for disabled children.
"Organising the show was a big team effort, from booking models to negotiating with suppliers to dressing the venue. It was daunting at times but also a great learning curve for all of us."
Kaira Edano acted as show producer for the event and oversaw everything that the 13-strong team did to bring the show to life.
She said: “It was a big challenge but we pulled it off and I’m very proud of what we achieved, particularly as we raised a significant amount for two charities. Organising the show was a big team effort, from booking models to negotiating with suppliers to dressing the venue. It was daunting at times but also a great learning curve for all of us.”
Senior lecturer in fashion design Amanda Odlin-Bates said: “We are very proud of the students. It was such a small team this year with only 13 students but they worked flat out to make this event a success, doubling-up on many jobs. It was amazing to see the venue looking so pretty on the night. It looked professional with all of the lights, balloons and lovely tables.
“The students raised the money for all of this ‘dressing’ of the room by baking and doing cake sales and raffles as they wanted all of the profits to go to the Preston Guild Rotary charity. The pop-up jewellery shop was fantastic and raised more than £400 for the New Life Charity too.”
