Double the impact for UCLan’s history research

Field-defining research handbook launched in London

UCLan is the only university to boast two chapters in a new field-defining research handbook on nineteenth-century magazines and newspapers.

Dr Andrew Hobbs and Dr Annemarie McAllister proudly displayed their work in the new two-volume Routledge Handbook to Nineteenth Century Periodicals and Newspapers, at the book’s recent London launch.

They were celebrating with the other authors, leading academics from universities around the world, but as UCLan’s two contributors, they made double the impact.

Senior Research Fellow Dr McAllister said: “We are both very proud to have been included in this prestigious book. It’s likely to become the standard reference work on 19th-century magazines and newspapers.

“These publications are relevant to many subject areas, and this field is certainly growing in importance as a source of study. Reviews have already mentioned the comprehensiveness and the innovative nature of the insights in this collection.”

Both UCLan scholars are acknowledged experts in their field, and as well as publishing many previous articles, chapters and books, have spoken internationally and locally on their specialist areas.

"These publications are relevant to many subject areas, and this field is certainly growing in importance as a source of study. Reviews have already mentioned the comprehensiveness and the innovative nature of the insights in this collection."

Senior Lecturer Dr Hobbs works on regional newspapers and periodicals, and his discoveries have changed the focus of periodicals studies and inspired the re-writing of histories of the press.

Dr McAllister writes and produces exhibitions on all aspects of the temperance movement, including songs, public events, the children’s movement The Band of Hope, and of course the periodicals.

Both Andrew and Annemarie were delighted to be asked to write chapters on their respective topics, joining many colleagues in keeping UCLan at the forefront of research.

Although the handsomely-illustrated hardback book is priced as a reference resource, it should be available in all major libraries, soon.
