Popular festival set to welcome thousands of visitors
The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) will be hosting its annual Lancashire Science Festival on campus from June 27 to June 29.
Event organisers expect that over the three days some 20,000 people will experience the fun and real-world applications of science, technology, engineering and maths, with the aim of enthusing and inspiring the next generation.
The free-to-attend event will welcome approximately 7,000 schoolchildren from across the region on the Thursday and the Friday, with the event culminating on Saturday 29 June with its popular family day.
Saturday’s public programme will have over 30 separate shows, workshops and drop-in sessions. They include finding out how Disney Pixar uses maths to make its films, exploring how exotic animals have inspired scientists and engineers to create new materials and technology, to experiencing space exploration in the Science Dome Planetarium.
"Each year the festival just gets better and better and we really get a buzz from seeing children and their parents experiencing the wonders of science"
For the medically minded there’s interactive workshops on being a paramedic for the day, trying out keyhole surgery or learning what happens to food in the gut and bowel in a session called from plate to poo.
The festival is now one of the biggest free events in Lancashire and is now in its eighth year. Dr Liz Granger, Lancashire Science Festival Director, said: “Each year the festival just gets better and better and we really get a buzz from seeing children and their parents experiencing the wonders of science.
“It’s a great way of getting young people engaged and firing up their imagination – what gives us great satisfaction is seeing youngsters leave with huge smiles on their faces and of course open minds.”
