Professor Lubaina Himid awarded CBE in the Queens Birthday Honours list
Turner Prize winner and University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) Professor Lubaina Himid has been recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list with a CBE.
The contemporary art professor, whose work is currently on display in four shows in Europe, including the Berlin Biennale in Germany, has been made a Commander of the British Empire for her services to art.
Lubaina, who was also awarded an MBE in June 2010 for services to black women's art, commented: “I’m delighted to have been awarded a CBE in the 2018 Queens Birthday Honours list and sincerely hope it will enable me to continue to develop even more collaborative strategies for connecting artists to audiences in a meaningful way.”
"I’m delighted to have been awarded a CBE in the 2018 Queens Birthday Honours list and sincerely hope it will enable me to continue to develop even more collaborative strategies for connecting artists to audiences in a meaningful way."
The CBE rounds off a successful 12 months for Lubaina, who won the prestigious Turner Prize last December and was named the 2017 Artist of the Year by Apollo Magazine.
Known as one of the pioneers of the British black arts movement back in the 1980s, Lubaina, who is also a PhD supervisor at UCLan, has spent her 35-year career shining a light on the trade in enslaved people and the contribution made by the people of the Black Diaspora.
The Head of the School of Art, Design and Fashion Maria Murray commented: “This is fantastic news for Lubaina and well deserved following a very successful year. Lubaina uses her high profile as a platform to speak out about the issues she is passionate about and promote other artists. I’m sure being made a CBE will only strengthen this.”
