Our Principles of safe and compassionate SACT (systemic anti-cancer treatment) delivery module focuses on the national and local standards expected of professionals administering systemic anti-cancer treatments.

This contemporary module provides theoretical elements that underpin safe handling and administration of systemic anti-cancer treatment.

You will have the opportunity to explore national and local guidance and examine compassionate and person-centred care.

You will use this fundamental knowledge to challenge practice, reflect on learning from clinical incidents and make suggestions for improvements in care provision.

You will be guided through the completion of the theoretical component of the UKONS SACT Competency Passport through classroom and directed study activities

Course overview

Completion of the module assessment will provide 20 credits towards a Level 6 (BSc) or Level 7 (MSc) programme of study at UCLan.

The content of the module incorporates a range of relevant and contemporary topics such as:

The biology of cancer
How SACT drugs work
Routes of SACT administration
Patient assessment
Toxicities of SACT and care of the patient
Safe handling and administration of SACT
Ethical, legal and professional Issues
Prophylactic/supportive/rescue interventions
The psychosocial impact of SACT treatment
Patient education and self-care advice
Advancing SACT practice – suggesting improvements for practice

Award: Level 6 & 7
Delivery: 5 online sessions with additional flipped classroom activities
Study Mode: Part-time
Duration: 5 Mondays
Start Date: Monday 31 March 2025 (and consequent Mondays)

Applicants should be health or social care professionals working within the field of anti-cancer treatment delivery.

The module is supported by high-quality evidence-based online resources.

A range of teaching/learning strategies will be utilised in order to provide the best possible learning environment.

These include key lectures from consultant/specialist nurses and academic staff, student seminar presentations, small group work, and reflections on practice.

Time is identified within the timetable to allow students access to tutorial support and library skills.

Students will be required to complete a formative and summative assessment for this module.
