Management of Same Day Consultation in Primary Care

Components of the course include consultation processes, therapeutic communication. Physical examination skills of the Ear, Nose, Throat, Respiratory and Gastro-Intestinal systems are taught along with structured history taking.

The emphasis of the teaching and learning strategy will be student-centred and aimed at utilising and maximising your own experiences to assist the learning process. Particularly the use of practical exercises in simulated settings, lectures, case study analysis, group activities and web-based learning.

This module would benefit nurses who are/intend to undertake the management of minor illness or provide a triage service in their clinical setting.

The aim of the module is to provide the student with the requisite knowledge and skills to competently manage same day consultations, within agreed protocols.

• Explore a variety of common presenting symptoms and apply knowledge of patho- physiological processes of disease to enable the effective management of minor illnesses
• Demonstrate competence in undertaking physical examination to formulate and manage a diagnosis within agreed protocols.
• Demonstrate a critical awareness of risk management strategies within clinical decision making.
