Resuscitation Council UK

The 1-day Immediate Life Support eLearning course (eILS) is developed by the Resuscitation Council UK for healthcare professionals who may act as emergency first responders.

eILS is a flexible way of learning skills in Immediate Life Support. The course blends e-learning with a face-to-face workshop.

An eILS course provides a variety of skills, including:

Managing a deteriorating patient
Identifying causes
Treating cardiac arrest
Improving abilities as both a team member and leader.

ILS was launched in 2002 after demand from healthcare professionals to learn skills needed to respond in an emergency. It is now the most popular Resuscitation Council UK course, and around 100,000 people are trained in ILS every year.

ILS certification is recognised across the UK, the EU and Australia.

Course overview

During the course, you will develop the skills to:

Recognise and treat the deteriorating patient using the ABCDE approach
Identify the causes and promote the prevention of cardiopulmonary arrest
Undertake the skills of quality CPR and defibrillation (AED) and simple airway manoeuvres
Utilise non-technical skills to facilitate team leadership and effective team membership.

Pre-course preparation

Before the course, you will be registered on our Learning Management System (LMS). The LMS allows you to access pre-course modules that will prepare you for your face-to-face session. You may also be asked to complete a pre-course multiple choice question (MCQ) paper.

You will receive your course manual at least two weeks before the course. Candidates are expected to read the manual in preparation for the course.

Programme

Candidates are free to complete the e-learning in their own time before the face-to-face session. The face-to-face session focuses on skill stations and cardiac arrest simulations (CASTeach).

Assessment and certification

Assessment is continuous throughout the course and is guided by the assessment forms provided for each core skill. Copies of the assessment forms should be forwarded to the Candidate with their manual.

Successful Candidates receive a Resuscitation Council UK ILS provider certificate, valid for one year.
