NU3149 - 10 credits at Level 6

This module has been developed to enable nurses to obtain knowledge of working in general practice.

The module will be of benefit to newly appointed practice nurses, newly qualified nurses and nurses in the acute or community sector considering working in general practice.

The content of this module links to the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP, 2012) General Practice Nurse Competencies.

The teaching strategies consist of classroom-based teaching. You are required to attend for 6 consecutive weeks 5-8 pm at the Preston campus and one further attendance to undertake the assessment.

Web-based software (Blackboard) facilities will further support the nurse in their studies.

This module has been developed to enable nurses to obtain knowledge of working in general practice.

Specific content:

General practice organisation/structure
NHS legislation / contracts
Legal and ethical issues in general practice – scope of professional practice
Risk management
The multi-disciplinary team
Communication with patients, consultation skills, history taking
User perspective and participation
Working in the ‘treatment room’ – infection control, health and safety, policies and procedures, clinical governance
Treatment room procedures – minor surgery, immunisations and vaccinations, wound care, ear care management
Triage and dealing with emergencies
Diagnostic and screening tests
Common medical conditions
Supporting Long Term Conditions

Learning outcome and aims

The aim of this module is to enable nurses to obtain knowledge of working in general practice and to prepare them for role development to meet the ever changing needs of primary health care. The nurse will critically examine the ways of working in general practice thus promoting an adaptable and responsive nurse who promotes the highest standards of client care. On successful completion of this module a student will be able to:

Critically reflect on the evolving role of the general practice nurse within the modern NHS.
Critically analyse the implementation and monitoring of quality assured standards of care by effective and efficient management of finite resources
Explore the variety of acute and long term presentations within general practice

Entry requirements

Students must have a current professional registration with a relevant professional/statutory body, such as the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

This course will involve you working with vulnerable groups of individuals, this may include children. In order to ensure that the University offers places on their programmes to suitable candidates you will be required to obtain a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service clearance (formerly termed CRB).

We will be able to guide you through this process once you have been offered a conditional place of study at the University of Central Lancashire.

It is important to note that should your Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check prove to be unsatisfactory for the purpose of the course you have applied to, your offer of a place for that course may be withdrawn. If you have already enrolled on a course and your DBS check subsequently discloses a criminal conviction, you may be required to withdraw from the course even if you have already started. If you are aware that your DBS check will disclose a previous conviction, please contact the course leader for advice as not all convictions may preclude you from continuing with the course.

A variety of lecturers with expertise in their specialities are involved in delivering the course.

A variety of teaching methods will be used to enable you to meet your learning outcomes of the module. These will include keynote lectures, tutorials, group discussions and e-learning.

Sessions will be delivered in a face-to-face format. This web-based software allows for live delivery and participation in the sessions no matter where you are based.

Summative assessment will be a presentation.
