Disaster Medicine student, Martin talks about his UCLan experience

Having previously studied in Cameroon, Martin joined UCLan in September 2022 and is currently enjoying all aspects of student life here at Preston Campus. Read his full story below:

"Lecturers are approachable, knowledgeable and help us achieve academic excellence – they really are amazing. On the MSc Disaster Medicine programme, I have enjoyed exploring different types of medicine and conceptualising scenarios. The feedback I get from my assignments is levels above what I have experienced at other institutions.

"I chose to study at UCLan because it offered the course I was interested in and has an excellent international reputation. I was really impressed with the campus when I arrived here, pictures online do not do the place justice! The environment during term time is buzzing and I love it.

"The library is top-notch and boasts state-of-the-art facilities. Everyone at the university is supportive and will listen to your problems, always providing helpful solutions. For example, when I landed at Manchester Airport, the welcome team provided excellent guidance on which train to take and how to arrive at campus.

Martin Geh Meh, MSc Disaster Medicine

"Preston is a picturesque city, with lots of interesting buildings and natural places. The nightlife here is also good. I like how easy it is to get around, and to travel to other places. Trains and buses run like clockwork and the prices are affordable. I have already visited Manchester and Chester and I am planning a trip to the Lake District which isn’t far from Preston.

"I feel safe living here, I always feel secure and not worried about crime.

"One thing which did take some getting used to is the weather. I am from a hot and humid country and the conditions here can get quite cold in the winter. However, I am now acclimatised and there are lots of places to buy affordable warm clothes in the city.

"It is very easy to make friends here. Whenever I am in social spaces on campus I always get chatting to new people. There are lots of international students here who are all in the same boat as myself. I would urge all students thinking about coming here to go for it – it’s the best academic decision I have ever made."
