Hannah Pinder studying the LPC in Legal Practice

LPC in Legal Practice

Hi, my name is Hannah and I’m studying the LPC in Legal Practice at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan).

For my Undergraduate degree, I didn’t study Law and completed my BA in Sociology at a different University. I came to the final year of my degree and it was a meeting with a careers advisor that made me consider Law as a career option. This was when I discovered the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) at UCLan, a conversion course that allows people who haven’t studied law for their undergraduate degree the chance to pursue a career in law.

The 'big moment'

The big moment for me was going along to cJAM two months in to my GDL, an event where all law students have the opportunity to pitch to employers for work placements. To be honest, I was terrified at the thought of doing this but after much persuasion from my mum, I went along. I managed to secure two placements at Napthens Solicitorsand Birchall Blackburn Law, which as someone new to the subject, was a huge buzz for me.

I was extremely proud of the fact that following my placement at Napthens Solicitors, I secured a part-time, permanent contract as a Legal Assistant in Commercial Property.

Job experience and course tutors

I worked alongside studying for my GDL and now my LPC. Prior to starting this role, going into commercial property was not a side of the law I had considered. The job experience I have gained so far has helped me get up to speed with various law terminologies on my course too.

I can’t speak highly enough of my tutors on both my GDL and LPC, who have been a huge support to me alongside the university’s links with employers, which has helped me get to where I am today. I have recently accepted a full time position at Napthens Solicitors in Commercial Property to commence as soon as I finish my exams in May 2020.

Groundwork for a 'successful career'

For anyone considering studying Law at UCLan, just go for it! The course is so intellectually stimulating, and topics are always changing with things that are going on in the news – there’s never a dull moment! The course has given me the groundwork for what I hope to be a long and successful career in the Law industry.
