Jonathan Lally wanted to work in sports media so chose our Sports Journalism degree to gain a good practical insight into the industry and give himself the best opportunity for a career in this area.
Whilst studying at the University of Central Lancashire, Jonathan worked as a Media Assistant for Preston North End Football Club and for the Lancashire Evening Post as a Digital Reporter, which allowed him to gain vital work experience. After graduating, he got a job working as a New Media Journalist for Norwich City Football Club where he stayed for two seasons before joining Leicester City Football Club as Club Journalist and Media Officer.
At Leicester City, Jonathan worked his way up to become Communications Manager before moving to his current role as Head of Media Relations, where he is responsible for managing the club’s relationship with external media, as well as helping uphold the club’s public reputation. Jonathan’s team is also responsible for internal communications and is the point of contact for all media access to players and staff at the football club.
Jonathan has been part of some great highlights for the club such as the 2015/16 Premier League win and a subsequent season in the UEFA Champions League. Speaking about that achievement, Jonathan said: “Being involved in Leicester City’s Premier League title win was a really special moment. It was so unexpected, and the world’s media descended on the football club, so we worked hard to deliver as much as we could while we were such a big story around the globe at that time. The tweet I wrote on the night the title was won is the most-shared sports tweet of all time.”
Jonathan spoke highly of his UCLan experience and its impact, he said:
"I loved the social side of university life, especially in Preston, where it’s such a great city for students. Without a degree from UCLan, I wouldn’t have been able to be do a job that I enjoy. I feel lucky to have this opportunity and happy that I chose the right course to prepare me for this career."
