Dipesh Asher chose to study at the University of Central Lancashire because the course had a good balance between business and IT and he thought it would stand him in good stead for finding employment. He wasn’t mistaken and undertook a placement as part of his course at SmithKline Beecham (now GlaxoSmithKline), in order to gain industry experience.
After graduation, Dipesh worked in the IT industry for four years as a Systems Administrator and support for two IT consultancy firms. He then returned to study and completed a postgraduate diploma in Computing. At the same time, Dipesh volunteered for Greater Manchester Sports Partnership (GreaterSport) and was offered a sports development job in cricket for the County Sports Partnership. This led to a role working for the Lancashire Cricket Board focussing on business and communications.
Dipesh now works for the Rugby League World Cup 2021 as a CreatedBy Executive. His job is to inspire communities and not-for-profit organisations to benefit from the Rugby League World Cup by delivering the CreatedBy RLWC2021 Capital Grants Programme. It aims to leave a legacy of growth in Rugby League at all levels.
Looking at the impact of studying at UCLan, Dipesh said:
"Being a graduate has definitely helped with my job prospects. I grew as a person at UCLan and it made me more ready for a working life outside education. I would encourage all further education leavers to go to university if possible. It is a challenging, yet enjoyable experience and an excellent opportunity to learn about life skills and make friends for life."
