Amy Edwards-Smith
Amy teaches across a range of subjects within the School. She has experience of working with individuals with additional learning needs and disability in education and social care settings. Amy's expertise is in Social Policy, in particular ideology, social justice and welfare. Amy works across various levels, from students starting their academic journey on a foundation level course to supporting dissertation students,
Amy has a wide range of teaching experiencing having successfully taught across various courses in the health and social care and education fields for 13 years. She has taught on subjects such as communication, academic writing, social construct of childhood, policy and practice and welfare developments to name a few. Amy has a particular interest in the concept of identity and is currently researching gender dysphoria cases in relation to individuals on the Autistic Spectrum.
Amy began her career as a Special Educational Needs and Disability learning support assistant, before working for an Autism outreach service. During this time Amy supported individuals with behaviour that challenged and provided training to teaching and social care staff. Amy realised on completion of her studies that she had a particular passion for pursuing social justice and advocating for positive change, which led her down an academic career path. Thoroughly enjoying educating the future cohorts of health and social care professionals Amy is keen to promote widening participation and a positive student experience.

Amy is currently researching gender identity in terms of individuals on the Autistic Spectrum in order to improve practice and service user experiences. In the past she has researched the benefits of tutorial systems for university students and the impact of welfare criteria on adults accessing the education system/
