Dr Amin Deyranlou
Amin is a Mechanical Engineer and works at the interface of Mechanical Engineering, Computational Modelling, and Medical Sciences. Holding a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from The University of Manchester, and experienced working in industry (as an engineer) and academia (as a research associate, research fellow, and now lecturer), Amin is an active researcher in his field and teaches a wide range of modules in Mechanical Engineering and relevant fields. Amin’s teaching philosophy is founded on a research-informed basis, where he tries to amalgamate the fundamental concepts with their applications in his various research fields.
Dr Amin Deyranlou is a Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering here. He joined us in October 2023 to be involved in research and teaching within the School. In teaching, Amin delivers a wide range of modules in Mechanical Engineering and relevant fields in Engineering Mathematics, Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Energy Systems, and Computer Modelling. In research, Amin is working at the interface of Mechanical Engineering, Medical Sciences, and Computer Modelling. His primary research theme is Numerical Modelling and Computation Fluid Dynamics (CFD), where he implements these techniques in Bioengineering and more specifically Biofluid Mechanics of Cardiovascular Flows.
Amin received all his degrees, i.e., BSc, MSc, and PhD in Mechanical Engineering. In September 2017, Amin started his PhD in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Manchester (UoM) to work at the interface of computational modelling and cardiovascular flows. During his PhD, Amin was fully supported through the highly prestigious and competitive President’s Doctoral Scholar (PDS) awarded by the University of Manchester.
During his PhD, in a collaborative and multidisciplinary project, Amin studied the effects of Atrial Fibrillation on cardiovascular flows. The project convened people from different schools and divisions, across the School of Engineering and Medical Sciences at UoM, Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, and Wythenshawe Hospital in Manchester.
After he finished his PhD in March 2021, he joined the Department of Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering at University College London (UCL) as a Research Fellow in CFD modelling of cardiovascular flows. Amin spent two years at UCL, where he worked in Wellcome/EPSRC Centre for Interventional and Surgical Sciences (WEISS) and collaborated with the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust and St Bartholomew's Hospital in London. In April 2023, Amin returned to Manchester, where he worked there as a Research Associate in CFD and heat transfer. In October 2023, Amin joined us as a Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering.
